A dishonest friend

By Razia Inam

I was sitting beside the window on my study table doing my homework. The moonbeams were coming from the window having a soothing and pleasant effect. It was half-past-eleven and all my family members were asleep except me who was going through the torture of doing excessive amount’s of homework.

I looked at the white glowing ball outside the window and sighed as I tried to concentrate on the most difficult question. Suddenly a light flashed on my face. I was bewildered and tried to find its source. I saw it was coming from my friend Ali’s house. Someone was holding a torch and flashing its light on my face.

I first thought it was a joke and moved out of its range but then again the light flashed on my face. I decided to go there to find what the matter was. On reaching there I found Ali standing beside the window holding the torch.

As I came in his view he switched it off and signalled me to be quiet. He threw a key wrapped in a piece of paper telling me that thieves had broken into his house and they were robbing the valuables at this very movement. They had locked him there as he was trying to resist them. He asked me to quietly sneak to the front door and lock it from outside so the thieves would not be able to escape and then I should call the police.

I hastened towards the front door but with caution so none of the thieves would be able to spot me. I locked the door and dashed towards my house. I quickly woke my dad up and told him about what was going on. He suddenly became alert and phoned the police. We both then ran towards Ali’s house where we could hear the banging of the door.

The police arrived fairly quickly. They unlocked the door with my key and went inside but the situation inside was pretty dangerous as the thief had caught hold of Ali’s brother and father and made them hostage.

The inspector with great skill took a perfect aim and rattled one thief’s skull. Then there was a sharp exchange of fire as law enforcement personnel sent two more criminals to their fate but in this process Ali’s brother Saad was shot in the arm.

My father quickly carried him to his car and drove him to the hospital. Meanwhile I tried to calm the remaining family members. I then unlocked the room in which my beloved friend was locked and after opening the door was greeted by Ali with a hug.

Then the police asked some question from all those present. They disclosed that one of the robbers was actually Saad’s friend who often came to visit them. That day when Saad opened the door to allow him in, two criminals joined him; in fact he was part of the group and now he was dead.

Meanwhile the phone rang. It was my dad who had called to assure all of us that Saad was fine. After this some of the neighbours came to the house to see what was going on. Anyway we all gave thanks that Ali’s family had been saved from being robbed. We also realised how important it is to have true friends and to avoid friendship with bad people. A dishonest friend can do more harm than a sworn enemy.
