My dollhouse

By Asra Ahmad

Each and every girl wants her dolls to have a home of their own with all the necessities of life. I'm sure you want your dolls' house to be well furnished and comfortable too with not even the tiniest details of a real house missed out. In this article, I will teach you to make some really lovely gifts for your dear dolls. All the items used are easily available around the house so you don't need to open your money boxes.

Wall clocks

Has the idea ever struck you to make a wall clock for your dolls? I don’t think so. Well, the process is very simple. There may be lots of broken wrist watches in your house, crying over their fate as they sit unmoved in the dusty storeroom. So, get your hands on one such watch. It is better to lay your hands on a children's watch because it is cheap and will save you from the danger of a good beating from your mom! Remove its strap and attach it in your dolls' house using tape, or if you want it to be permanent, use glue and voila! Your dolls will always be on time! If you wish and if you are willing to spend some pennies then get your watch loaded with cells, so it can be really accurate and you can also peep inside the dolls' house and know the time. That will be extremely realistic, won't it!

Windows

Pieces of broken glass come in handy at this stage. Get a square piece of glass or, if you want to be funkier, get a triangle or oval one or any shape you desire and tape a scenery on one side. This window looks beautiful and the scenery, if peeped at from inside the house, looks as if your dolls have come to stay at a dream resort!

Curtains

Use tissue paper, pieces of net or fabric. Gather it from the upper part and sew. Use glue with tissue. Use ribbon as a tie-up and wow! All who look at your curtains will be spellbound!

Mirrors

Dig your hand in the heap of useless stuff piled up in a nook at your house and look for pieces of mirrors in any shape you wish. If you are lucky to have some glass paints then make a pretty pattern around the mirror. If not, then make use of ribbons, laces and beads or any other embellishments that you think can enhance the beauty of your dolls' bedroom. Use some tape to secure the mirror onto the wall of the house or let it be there forever with glue and you have a splendid piece of art for your dolls!

Pillows

Ask your mom for some pretty fabric and some leftover pieces of lace, some beads, a needle, some stuffing and thread. Cut two rectangles, the size of a small pillow for your dolls, and sew the right sides together but leave one side open. Turn over the pillow so that the right sides show up. Stuff it with cotton, tissue or pieces of fabric. Alternatively, use rice, beans and the like. Sew up the open ends and trim with gathered lace.

Sheets

For sheets, simply cut a large piece of cloth and trim the border with ribbons and lace. If you want to be creative then prepare the pillow and sheets from plain white cloth, then use fabric paints to decorate the items according to the colour scheme of the dolls' bedroom. That will give a real personalised touch to it. You can sew on some beads, print motifs or do a little embroidery. For a soft bed, sew up two rectangles and fill with soft stuffing. Your dolls will feel like they are sleeping on clouds!

Wardrobe

Take a shoe box with a separate lid. Cover the box and lid with wrapping paper or simply cover with white paper and decorate using paints, markers, colours, motifs, fabric, beads and glitter. Attach small nails inside the lid so you can hang your dolls' hats and scarves and handbags. On the inside of the box attach a small stick or even a pencil. Now you have a great gift for your special dolls!

Brooms

No, that's no joke. If you wish to impress the dolls' guests by the tidiness of the house then do give it a try. Simply take a wooden stick and attach small pieces of brown thread or wool at one end. Tape this broom into the hands of one of your old dolls that has been the victim of your naughty brother and is damaged, and wonder of wonders! You have hired a maid for your dolls!

Towels

Don't laugh like that! Take an old towel and wash it up. Cut small rectangular pieces out of it and in less than 15 minutes you have a heap of towels for your dolls!

Dishes

Use crown caps from cold drink bottles as plates while plastic caps from water bottles work well for bowls. Decorate them according to your likes. If you wish you can fill the bowl with uncooked rice or any other eatable that you can think off. What about putting in some brown beads as gulab jamun?

I hope that by now you must have been filled with dolly ideas to the brim. Soon, you will have a doll house that even your mom would like to accommodate. Can I hear the boys moaning? Well, boys, what about making these things as a superb gift that your sis will cherish forever! Good luck!
