Kumhar Mela at Arts Council

By Text & Photos by Abu Ammar

A three-day Kumhar Mela kicked off at the main lobby of the Arts Council last week. The exhibition attracted a lot of people from almost all walks of life. The mela was organised by ASNA Clay Triennial to promote local ceramists and their skilled output towards the international market.

In the three-day show, potters from different parts of the country displayed a variety of clay-made items at the exhibition. The items including urns, utensils, and decoration items carved out of mud (chikni mitti or multani mitti) and baked in kilns and patterned with colourful glasswork looked absolutely stunning.

Children who visited the mela with their parents showed a keen interest at the live demonstration of pottery making. The Ahmed Pervez Art Gallery at the Arts Council had also displayed dozens of items from 12 different countries including the UK, Ireland, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia and others which were also part of the exhibition. The items on display included bronze sculptures, claypots and different shapes to express the theme.
