MOVIE: MacGyver

By Omair Alavi

Richard Dean Anderson plays Angus MacGyver, a cool scientist with principles, in the recently-released MacGyver: The Complete First Season on DVD. Aired in 1985, more than 20 years ago, the serial was an instant success because it had a hero who used his head more often than a firearm and avoided violence at all costs, except when it was needed.

Created by Lee David Zlotoff, MacGyver doesn't have gadgets to help him succeed in his escapades but was laced with always-present wits, encyclopaedic knowledge of science (which we don't take seriously at all) and a cool-minded nature. Be it a security-locked room or an insurmountable mountain, an ant attack or a junkyard, MacGyver always succeeded to escape, using every day items such as hairpin or paperclip for an electric conductor, plastique as a time-bomb and a chewing gum for sticking his home-made bombs in the desired places.

'Mac' as he was referred to as the series progressed, enjoyed a cordial relationship with his dear friend Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar), who was also his boss and Director of Field Operations at the Phoenix Foundation. In this 6-DVD Box Set that features the 22 episodes of MacGyver's first season, Pete sends MacGyver on missions of national importance to around the world with Mac showing the viewers how he is always ready to combine useless stuff into a useful invention!

Unconquered as a favourite TV series for two decades, the show is still gaining viewer ship among the young and the old. It helped the lead actor reach stardom while made the Swiss Army knife he carried a symbol for ever readiness. The simple-yet-effective tricks he showed on screen gained off-screen popularity, earning the name “MacGyverisms”.

Nearly all episodes carry an escape-gambit where MacGyver takes the cake with his ever-ready brains and always-working hands while he returns triumphant from every problem imaginable. What makes the show on DVD better than TV reruns is that here there are no commercials and no scene is uncut. Add the amazing theme song and you get a serial you will enjoy, alone, or with friends and at all times!
