Dare to dream!

By Sahar Majid

The national awards ceremony of the sixth annual Unilever International Art Project for schools was held recently in Karachi. The event marked the culmination of a two-day exhibition in which art pieces designed by children across Pakistan were showcased. A total of 150 schools participated this year and out of all the entries 250 pieces were short-listed.

The ceremony was well attended by teachers, students and key stakeholders. Sydney Picasso, daughter-in-law of legendary and world-renowned artist, Pablo Picasso, was the chief guest.

This year’s theme was “Dreams and Reality” and it was an effort to challenge the youth to think imaginatively of what they are passionate about and what their dreams are. The art projects were designed keeping in mind that those who dare to dream can definitely achieve their goals. Centred on the subject, the artworks presented by the students were terrific and clearly showed the time and effort put in by them.

There were three categories of students who participated in the contest. The first group consisted of children between five to 10 years, students between the age group of 11 to 14 years were placed in the second category and 15- to- 18-year-old students belonged to the third group. Each category had four winners — First, Second, Third and Runner-up. Two panels of judges selected the winners. Sameera Raja, Curator — Canvas Gallery; artists Wajid Ali, Imran Qureshi, Rahat Saeed and Tabassum Rizvi and Photographer Ayesha Vellani were the regional judges. Mrs Shehnaz Ismail, Head of the Textile Department at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture and Sydney Picasso conducted the final judging.

The three winning artworks will be exhibited and judged at the Tate Modern Art Gallery in London. The winner of the international judging will be eligible to attend the final awards’ ceremony in London along with a guardian. The event is scheduled for March 2007.
