Turn On Your Creativity

By Meera Jamal

It ‘occasionally’ happens that studies sound too boring. Ok, make it often. Reading, memorising and doing homework, it seems like the never-ending punishment Prometheus (the Greek god) was given by Zeus for giving away the secret of fire to humans. But have you ever thought of various methods through which you can make this scrupulous and morbid task somewhat interesting? With loads of homework copies to carry home and assignments to do, where is the time to play? Well guess what, let’s explore some possible ways to make this painstakingly boring work little fun stuff!

Do you like music? I am sure all of you do. How about listening to music while doing homework? No I am not joking at all. Can you recall the English alphabets that you memorised in your early childhood? What about the Urdu ones? The answer is very simple, because we memorise ABCD in a musical form we tend to remember it more than if we did without it. That is why only a handful of people can bring to mind the Urdu alphabets. But make sure music should be instrumental. No lyrics to it. What happens is that if the music is accompanied by lyrics you get distracted by words.

This musical trick will help you keep in a livelier mood as well as you know that music boosts the energy level too. Specially while doing math sums or drawing figures, etc. Have you ever thought about making a song out of boring and tormenting subjects such as history and geography. No, then give it a try; you don’t necessarily need to be a melodious singer for that.

Well, there is something even more interesting that you can do. Except for mathematics and languages if you have difficulty in any subject, ask your teacher or group mates to give you topics to discuss in the class. Browse through the Net and find some easy to understand version on the subject. Try to illustrate that in a diagram form. If it is a play or historical figure that you have chosen, you can enact it by choosing the abridged stories available on it. What happens is that it no longer remains homework, it actually becomes an activity.

Studying in group is always fun. So try to formulate your group, divide topics among yourself and study them, and then later discuss. Plus you can also chill out at the end of the discussion. The benefit of group study is that some of your group mates might be better than you in a particular subject and they can help you in it. You can return the favour helping them in areas that are your forte and in which they are weak.

Well, to tell you the truth I was good at history in school. Well, you can be too. How? You all have a TV and VCD or DVD player at home. Go out and hunt for and watch as many documentaries and movies that have been made on famous wars, historical people and incidents. You know the scientist claim that the human mind thinks with the help of images, that is why when you read a novel you develop images in your mind about how the character should appear like. After having seen a movie on the subject, chances of remembering it are much greater than only studying the subject. Well, if you have access to the TV channel on history then no need to worry about getting hold of the movies. This channel also shows movies on a particular subject throughout the month. Plus there are channels that tell you a lot about various places in the world and their cultures. You can find websites that individually focus on one subject and there are some that cater to all your needs so it is really up to you to decide which one you like best.

Another way to learn is to experiment and see how true the details in the books are, especially in science. The Greeks and Romans did not have schools that were confined to buildings. In fact, the teacher used to roam around the city and discuss with his student whatever they saw and observed. And that civilisations witnessed the greatest scholars, scientists, philosophers, etc. ever. So, try to go beyond the textbook and learn to observe yourself. Ask questions about it and if you find difficulty in finding answers take the help of books and the Internet. (But that doesn’t mean that you ask so many questions that people around you are annoyed. Remember where there is a will there’s a way). For instance, if your textbook says that plants have roots which help absorb nutrients from the soil, then ask your teacher or parents to demonstrate it to you. I would also advise you to visit museums and historical places to learn about them.

Apart from that there are many websites that can help you in your homework and assignments. These websites have a lot to help you out. From history to mathematics you name it. Plus there are also sum games on the website that will help you improve your skills.

Let me share a secret with you. If you find it difficult to memorise certain facts about social studies for example, what you need to do is to try to make a web diagram or a chart that sketches out the outline of what you have studied. Now count the points that you have jotted down and try to memorise them. Whenever you need to recall the details just chalk out the web diagram or the chart and see how easy it makes it for you to remember.

I know no one wants to lag behind in studies but it’s just too tough. Right? I think you are mistaken and you underestimate yourself. What it requires is that you take interest as when you find something boring you tend to give up on it easily. So next time you find a subject boring you should make an effort to make it appear interesting to yourself.
