35th international letter-writing competition

Pakistan Post Office hosted the Award Presentation Ceremony in honour of the winners of the "35th International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People” at the General Post Office, Lahore, on World Postal Day. The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Post Master General, Punjab Circle Chaudhary Muhammad Ashraf and Mr Nasir Hassan Deputy Post Master, Lahore Circle. This competition was organised in support of the Universal Postal Union's 35th International Letter-Writing Competition, with the objective of promoting youngsters' interest in letter-writing as a means of sharing thoughts with others. "I am writing to tell you how the postal service helps me connect with the world" was chosen as the theme for this year's competition, to increase awareness among young people of the important role postal services play in our society and foster their affection for writing letters.

Each year, the UPU International Bureau organises letter writing competitions. The UPU's international letter-writing competition for young people dates back to 1969 when the Tokyo Congress voted to introduce a competition aimed at promoting letter writing among young people. The first competition was launched in 1971 and since then, millions of youngsters all over the world have participated in the competition at national and international levels.

In the competition students from both government and private schools participated enthusiastically. Babur Rauf of Sacred Heart High School, Jhang, stood first, Syeda Zahra of PCS, Lahore, bagged second position and Sobia Jamal of F.G. Girls High School, Bannu Cantt, stood third.

The officiating guest Mr Chaudhary Arshad awarded winners with cash prizes along with postage stamps albums and certificates.

Fun and food programme for special children

Artist and social worker Jimmy Engineer in collaboration with Mr Byram D. Avari and his family had arranged an Iftar Party at the Beach Luxury Hotel Karachi for over 250 blind children to celebrate the International White Cane Day which is organised every year all over the world. In this function, the blind children recited Naat and Qawali and expressed their feeling through speeches. This function was arranged for special children so that they get a feel of the atmosphere just like any other normal children. These programmes are held frequently so that greater awareness about the problems faced by these children is highlighted through the media and only then can people come forward and help them in their own way.

Mr Jimmy Engineer appealed to different segments of society to come forward and play a part in improving the lives of these special children by offering different monetary or materialistic help, which would bring a smile on the faces of these wonderful children.

Our country is still far away from giving these special children privileges just like in the West, but we are sure that such programmes will eventually lead the way for a better understanding between these children and our society.
