Today we are standing at a threshold where it is important to prepare the future generation to meet future environmental challenges. Children whether at home or school observe and learn from their environment and surroundings. The role of educated children in society cannot be overlooked. Environmental conscious students, called Green students, can play an important role in the preservation of the environment today and can work towards promoting environmental ethics at large.
Students are the potential agents of change in our society who can make tremendous contribution to save our environmental resources. Green students can help greatly in raising awareness about the environment. They can motivate their parents, relatives and friends at school and villages or towns, to conserve natural resources and animal habitats.
These students can run campaigns, in which a group of students would work together on an essay or article on wildlife or environment for newspapers or the school magazine. They can also arrange display stalls during various school functions which would display wildlife drawing, paintings, sketches, models and conservation slogans to attract people. Competitions can also be arranged which would enhance the knowledge of the students about wildlife and environmental resources.
Environment friendly students may also form a study circle within their class or the school or in their localities, where they can discuss different environmental issues and provide suggestions to mitigate these problems.
Various activities and thematic plays can also be produced by school children on topics such as ‘mother earth’, ‘earth and pollution’, ‘forest and man’ etc.
The environment around us not only provides us with water, air, and other natural resources with which we sustain ourselves, it also offers each of us a unique sense of belonging. Green students with the assistance of teachers can provide dustbins made of ordinary milk and ghee tins with messages like “keep the school neat and clean” displayed on it to make other students aware of the importance of cleanliness. This act would also promote recycling.
During weekends and summer vacations students can focus on various environmental campaigns in and around their localities. Cleanliness-campaigns can be organised by forming groups of motivated students and children to conduct periodical cleanliness drives in public parks and other public places. This will motivate the general masses too. Students can also plant trees in spring and during the monsoons. Awareness walks on important international environmental days could be organised for mass awareness.
Besides this, students can make drawings and write essays on environmental themes and concepts, which they can display on the notice-boards in their schools which will play an important role in motivating other students as well.
When out on a picnic with families in parks or natural resorts they can help the environment by not throwing about wrappers or other items in the open but by disposing them off in proper dust bins.
Practicing good environmental stewardship in and around their homes or schools is a vital way for students to make a positive contribution to the quality of the environment where they live. This would indeed foster positive environmental change through their initiative and would lead to a sense of achievement.
