“I have sent so many stories to the magazine and I know they are very good but I don’t know why they are never printed.”
“I don’t know what the teacher has against me; I know my answers but even then I get less marks.”
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? I’ll tell you what the problem is and why your work is not encouraged, never gets published or gets less marks.
There are certain rules that you have to follow while writing – whether composing an exam paper or an article or a story for some magazine – or else the chances are that you will be left complaining.
What most kids do is that they just write down what they want to know. They do not bother to revise itheir work or even run a spellcheck and are least bothered about punctuation. It often happens that when we receive a document submitted for publication, we are unable to make sense of it. If it is handwritten the writing may be illegible; if it is typed, as they mostly are these days thanks to the computer, half the words are misspelt and there is no sense of punctuation.
Now tell me, if we get write-ups that are all jumbled up without para graphs or sentence breaks, with hundreds of spelling mistakes, wouldn’t it be difficult for us to read them?
One more thing that can be counted as a negative is the use of SMS/chat language. It is okay to use abbreviations while you are chatting or messaging but definitely not when you are writing something serious like an article/story or doing homework.
What happens is that we keep such submissions aside to read when we have enough free time (which we hardly get) and use the ones that are carefully written. So, if you take care to spellcheck your document and punctuate it properly, you have more of a chance to see your stuff in print.
