COVER STORY: School life... the good old days

By Syed Waqas Haider

Ever wondered why we have to study and go to school and why can’t we enjoy our lives? Today, when you are actually experiencing it as an individual, you really cannot understand the essence of these times. Frankly speaking, all of us consider these days as hell. The very thought of waking up in the morning, getting out of our cosy bed and saying goodbye to that comfy blanket and to that so very friendly pillow makes us hate our schools even more. But I'm so sure that there would be a day when everyone of us would feel the absence of those fun filled days with friends, of those times when life seemed so very warm in a sense when we had a little world of our own which included our family, our relatives, our room, our enemies, our secrets, who knows when would these be forsaken.

School days bring with it true friends with whom we can share our joys and ambitions, but some are not so lucky. So what if some of us don't have true friends? At least we have true enemies whom we can mock every day! Do you think it is good to consider school life hell when we have so many of our friends at school who wait for us every day, who help us in every way, whom we never want to go astray... Hey I made a rhyme!

The fact is that the absence of these little things would merely make our lives hell. I don't think if there is anything more exciting than bunking periods at school. The fear of our teachers who seem to copy Hitler at times, the fear that someone might catch us, makes it even more fun. And that's what school life's all about — fun, friends and our never ending education.

Well, whenever I ask my dad about his school days, I really sense a gleam of amusement and a sparkle of enthusiasm in his eyes while he narrates his account as a student with his friends, about surprise birthday parties, about how they collected money for their friend's gift. By that I know how much he treasures his good old days. This proves that school is not as torturous as we think it to be. It is just that since we have created such a grotesque image of our schools that we never bother to view it as a place of learning.

Have you ever asked your elder brother or sister who at the moment is in college whether they treasure those never-ending days? Just ask them and I'm sure their reply would make a difference in your opinion. In short, each and every person studying in a school should realise that these times will not last forever.

Just some hours of fun filled education and studying and then admission in some good college or university perhaps leading to a good job and, of course, loads of money!

Every class always has its share of nerds. This aspect of school life is pretty entertaining as it gives us opportunity to be amused by their docile yet studious presence.

School life is also about the many clashes that we have between groups in our school. It is fun to see groups fighting after school hours. School life also includes hot gossips, spicy rumours, or the masala filled affairs we get to hear every second at school. It is pretty awkward to see even the ugly ones into affairs but that's what school life is about... ain't I right?

At times we get pissed-off by students who claim they have been to foreign countries or claim to be the relatives of some superstar on TV or about their experience with the supernatural. And what do we have to say? "Duh, get a life!" Well, my dear friends, school life would never be as interesting without these people and their exotic tales.

I burn with jealousy when I see that guy entering with gel on his hair, his perfume so dense as to reach my principal’s room, and damn, I like his style! But then again that fool does make me realise "Why don't I get stared at?" As weird as it may sound but that's the truth!

School life has its own bliss, its own atmosphere and its own world as we would call it. A world that has our memories, our buried times filled with fun. School life would never seem fun without us cheating in tests. For once, I guess the majority does find cheating fun. When we are cheating and suddenly the ‘creeps’ of our class get us caught and when we have to explain all over what exactly we were doing. Whew! That's the worst part. And I guess it's rather a thrilling experience to think about excuses and not those which we made the previous time.

Well, I believe Shakespeare was absolutely correct when he said "All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players". How Shakespearean, isn't it? Following this, I do regard myself as a good actor specially at times when I have to give an explanation to my headmistress while bunking the maths class or to my mom when I'm simply trying to get some good sleep and have to fake a headache or a severe stomach ache. However, what I get to hear from my mom is far from encouraging and undermines my chances as an actor. "Hey, I did that too in my school days!" Well, worse than that, who can ever forget the embarrassing moments when we get scolded or insulted by our teachers. Damn! Teachers at times are so rude! Don't they have a heart? Can't they treat us as humans!

School in other words is like a sphere, a globe with loads of children with lots of hopes and ambitions. It’s even utterly boring to hear about what our classmates have to say about their plans for the future and it's even fun to reply in a whiny voice: "Please, keep it to yourself!” I am certainly not interested if you're going' to the States for studies or to hell!"

Well, I'm sure there really will come a day when you'll laugh, laugh with all your heart, about your school days. Laugh at your excuses, your friends; laugh about everything related to your school days. One day all of you would be someone important but never would there be a day when you wouldn’t cherish your 'good old days' and that's for sure, I can bet that! These days are not to be considered hell, but to be enjoyed to the utmost so that when some day you become a doctor or engineer or an actor you really have no regrets. These days will bring back warm memories that you will cherish for a lifetime.
