 Defence Day celebrations

With traditional zeal and fervour “Defence Day of Pakistan” was celebrated at the PAF Base Lahore. The day dawned with special prayers and Fateha Khawani in all PAF mosques for the shaheeds who laid down their lives defending Pakistan.

The auspicious day was observed with a renewed pledge and determination to make ‘Fizaia’ worthy of Pakistan. Air Marshal (Retd) Farooq Qari, a veteran of PAF inaugurated the proceedings. The ceremony was attended by a large number of retired PAF Officers, JCOs, NCOs and Airmen of Pakistan Air Force. Later the Base was opened for the general public who gathered in large number to witness the aerial and ground display of aircraft and associated equipment including F-16, Mirage, F-7P, F-7PG and A-5. It remained opened for the public throughout the day. In addition, ground support and other auxiliary equipment was also put on display. Large stalls were set up where people could buy calendars and other souvenirs and literature pertaining to PAF. Children were shown films about the PAF.

Impressive solo flying displays by PAF aircraft were also performed reflecting the combat and flying skill of the pilots, which drew attention and admiration from the public. The ultra light display and aero-modelling aircraft also enthralled the visitors.

A special parade was held in the morning whereas base Commander Air Commodore Tubrez Asif read out the Chief of Air Staff’s order of the day.



Book Fair held in city

The 18th Annual Book Fair 2006 organised by Paramount Books at both its outlets was held in the city and was visited by thousands of people. Book lovers selected their favourite titles and availed discounts of 15 to 75 per cent on various categories.

This year over 65,000 book-titles were displayed in the fair from all leading publishers around the globe. According to the management, a large number of books were reprinted in India to be sold on sale price in local market to discourage piracy and encourage the sale of original books. They also informed that a special deal with Lady Bird as also inked to provide a large range of children’s books to the local students.

This year the most sought after book of the fair was ‘Guinness Book of World Records 2007’ which was urgently shipped from UK and offered at a special discounted prize of Rs1395.

The books displayed in the fair covered all subjects from general history to science, fiction, technology, computers, curriculum of all grades, stories for children, and novels from all world’s leading authors. Children’s books, comics and colouring material were the main stalls which glued almost all children during the 11-day book fair.
