An unforgettable lesson

By Tashkeel Ahmed Farooqui

When Noman turned 17 and passed his matric exams with an “A” grade, he started asking his parents to buy him a motorbike. Noman belonged to a decent middle-class family who couldn't easily bear such expenses but when he kept on demanding a bike, his parents had to buy one for him.

As Noman took the motorbike first he learned how to ride it from his father, then he started riding the bike at high-speed in his area by himself. After some time when he had had enough practice he started going all around all by himself. He spent a lot of time riding a bike and wouldn't pay attention to his studies. His father had urged him not to ride rashly but he paid no heed to his father's exhortation.

One day Noman made a programme with his friend, Waqas, to go on picnic. They took Noman's bike and went to the seaside without telling their families where they were going. On the seaside there were lots of people, who were taking a bath and enjoying themselves. They both bathed in the water; after some time they felt hungry so they started eating their sandwiches, which they had brought with them. They stayed there till late afternoon and enjoyed enormously.

When they felt tired they decided to come back home, Noman started the bike and Waqas sat behind him. Noman was riding very fast, Waqas told him not to ride the bike rashly but he did not pay any attention to Waqas. When they turned to an alley, Noman saw a car coming at some speed; Noman's eyes widened and he at once went for the brake, but it was too late.

The bike collided with the car badly, Waqas was thrown out while Noman was lying under the bike, he received serious injuries and his left leg was aching, he was writhing with pain while Waqas was lying unconscious on the ground. Some people gathered and took them to the nearest hospital. At home Noman’s parents were worried when he didn't reach home in time. They contacted Waqas' parents only to be told that Waqas didn't come home as well, so they started searching for them. Finally they found them in a hospital, where Noman's condition was serious while Waqas was fine; he only got some little scratches and stitches on his body.

Doctors told Noman's parents that he had broken his left leg, and now he needed complete bed rest of six months, he was still unconscious. When he gained consciousness, he realised what had happened. Then he apologised to his parents and asked God's forgiveness too. He was taught a lesson that he would remember all his life.
