The result of haste

By Samreen Fatima

Tina was a very talented, enthusiastic and confident girl. She had achieved every goal in her life. After completing her studies she joined an advertising company as an adviser. Her life was running smoothly and she was very happy but in spite of all these blessings she had one bad habit. She was always in a hurry. She walked fast, she ate fast, she spoke fast, she listened to fast music at a high volume, and she drove fast. Her mother always taught her that the work which is done in a hurry is always short-lived. But she paid no heed to her mother’s advice.

One day she woke up at 8 O’clock. She was in a very bad mood because her mother hadn’t woken her up early and she was getting late for work. When she drew the curtains from the window, the beautiful view of her garden, the fragrance of flowers and the fresh morning air greeted her. She hurriedly got ready and went into the kitchen to quickly eat her breakfast. Her mother told her that she did not like this habit of hers and that she needed to slow down. Her mother said that if Tina did not overcome this habit of hers then she would not talk to her.

Tina hastily took her car keys and said, “Come on mom! I am getting late. You didn’t wake me early so now how can I slow down myself now, I have to hurry!” and she hurriedly got into her car. Like every other day, her mother reminded her not to drive fast because work which is done in a hurry is always short-lived and can prove to be harmful. Tina started driving. At a turning from her street, she turned on the radio at the highest volume and began driving fast as usual. She was listening to music and was deeply immersed in the song. When she took a turn she slightly smiled to herself and nodded her head, thinking of her mother and mumbled, “Don’t drive fast hmm! As if I’d have an accident and –” BASH….!

She opened her eyes and felt immense pain throughout her body. Around her she saw two doctors and her parents. Just then she remembered that her car had bumped into a truck. Her mother came beside her and said, “God saved your life.”

Tina saw tears in her parents’ eyes. She tried to console them and said, “Mom, dad, don’t worry I will be fine very soon.” and gave them a quick smile. Her mother started weeping and said, “How many times have I told you to listen to my advice, but you didn’t pay any attention. And now see because of that you have lost your leg. Now you cannot drive fast, can’t walk fast!” Tina now realised her mistake, but she had had an accident and it was too late.

Today Tina is sitting in her room and advising her tuition students to never hurry in their work because work which is done in a hurry causes a heavy loss. When she said this, tears fell from her eyes and rolled down her cheeks.
