MOVIE: She’s the man

By Nida Sajid

Everybody has a secret… Duke wants Olivia who likes Sebastian who is really Viola whose brother is dating Monique so she hates Olivia who’s with Duke to make Sebastian jealous who is really Viola crushing on Duke who thinks she is a guy…

Another one of those numerous so-called “teen-flicks”, She’s the man has much to offer other than a vivacious Amanda Bynes (What a girl wants), with a handful of fresh-faced appeal of a young cast. Dotted with upbeat sound tracks, hot hunks and cute chicks, with a sprinkle of mindless dialogue and a farcical yet witty plotline, She’s the man comes across as a rib-tickling comedy.

The film hits off when Viola Johnson (Amanda Bynes) meekly succumbs to her brother Sebastian’s (James Kirk) pleas to help him as he tries to break into the music scene in London. Viola, an avid football player sees this as a golden opportunity to pursue her passion and silence the superficial jocks once and for all, and enrols at Sebastian’s new boarding school, Illyria Prep, disguised as her twin brother. Then follows a perplexing chain of events as Viola endeavours to deceive the whole student body of Illyria Prep by her subterfuge and falls for Sebastian’s dashing roommate, Duke (Channing Tatum), who in turn is obsessed with the most beautiful girl on campus, Olivia (Laura Ramsey). Making matters worse, Olivia has the hots for Sebastian i.e. Viola masquerading as her twin brother. What happens when the real Sebastian arrives two days earlier adding to the frenzied frolic? Find out in this slapstick 105-minute flick.

Bynes delivers with zeal whilst Tatum is credible as Duke. The movie manages to pull your giggle-chain. Go for it if you are in for something light and hilarious on a Saturday afternoon. Happy laughing! Ciao!
