Why always girls?

I think all parents consider their daughters a burden. This attitude usually leads to the daughter being married off into some family which they barely know and cannot begin to comprehend their temperaments. I don’t understand why girls are forced into marriage, with the belief that without this label they will be incomplete. They believe a girl cannot succeed in life without being married. Why aren’t boys forced to marry? When parents marry off girls to strangers they suffer immensely and are unable to adjust to their new homes.

The Matric system

This is in response to the problem in the Super Sis column by “Confused Cancerian” (YW, June 3). I disagree with Super Sis when she says that the Matric System is of no use. I think the syllabus is well-rounded and covers all that a student should know at this stage. I also disagree with her when she says that while giving Matriculation examinations we have to memorise the syllabus, but the syllabus is too lengthy and cannot be memorised. I am not against Cambridge system but I think one shouldn’t criticise Matric System too; it isn’t all that bad.

Frequent power breakdowns

Power failures are a frequent occurrence in Karachi. In the hot summer months, power failures not only disrupt the lives of the common man but also make students suffer. In these months, most students are sitting for exams and it is impossible to study without electricity. Valuable time is wasted in waiting for the power to return. Prior notice for load shedding would be helpful for everyone to plan his or her work to some extent.

The authorities concerned must make sure that the electricity of libraries should never be discontinued as students can go and prepare for their exams there.

Everyone suffers from the power crisis; industries are affected too. However industries can recover their losses within a few hours of over-time but if students fail to pass their exams, the whole year is wasted. It is an age when time is very precious; wastage of a whole year as a result of power failures could ruin any child’s career.

I implore the officials to look into the matter and try to solve it.
