Heritage — a blessing

By Sehar Mehmood Shallwani

Azam belonged to a very rich family. His father used to buy and sell property because it was a very profitable business. Azam had completed his intermediate and was thinking about his career. He became lazy after intermediate and the reason for his laziness was that he was confused about his career. He couldn’t decide what to study and which subjects would be best for him. Tired of his indecisiveness and laziness his parents persuaded him to go to the Northern areas of Pakistan so that he could go and think about what he wanted to do in life in a more relaxed atmosphere.

After several hours of travel Azam reached his destination. As he was not used to travelling he felt very tired and spent the whole of the first day sleeping. The next morning he picked up his camera and went around sightseeing. The places that Azam visited were very beautiful. He had heard that the northern Areas of Pakistan were very beautiful and most places and sites had historical significance, but he had no knowledge of the history and felt that it was all because of lack of interaction. Being completely mesmerised by the beauty, Azam began to take pictures. Not only did he take pictures of the beautiful scenery but he also took pictures of the heritage buildings that added to the beauty of the place. He also talked to the people in those areas so as to learn about the various places.

Azam took many pictures and these spoke volumes of the beauty of the place. He spent a few days there and returned refreshed and full of energy. A few days later Azam saw an advertisement in the newspapers for a photography competition in which young, amateur photographers were asked to submit their photographs. Azam readily submitted the photographs he had taken during his vacation and was very optimistic. When the results were announced he was glad to know that he had won the first prize.

At the prize distribution ceremony, when he was called to receive the prize, he was asked to say a few words. He took this opportunity to tell everyone that if they wanted to experience true peace and tranquillity they should see nature from close by. “We have rich cultural heritage, we must explore it,” he said with a smile.
