Every year on the second Sunday of May, the world celebrates the women who nurture and raise us and our siblings, provides us with the most delicious foods that we can eat, kisses our tears away when we’re scared or hurt and is the best friend we can ever have. Who is she? Readers, we’re talking about none other than our mothers and Mother’s Day is the one day when you can thank your mom in a very special way for just being her.
You know, Mother’s Day is not exactly a new day as many of us might believe. Mother’s Day is a very very old celebration and can be traced as far back as ancient Greece to the spring celebrations in honour of Rhea, the Mythical Mother of the Greek gods. It was also celebrated in the 1600s in England, where there used to be a day called “Mothering Sunday” which honoured all the mothers of England.
However, the Mother’s Day that the world now celebrates, basically originated in the United States and was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Ms Howe would hold organised Mother’s Day meetings in Boston, Massachusetts ever year. From then onwards, the practice of setting aside a special day for mothers spread to all the countries of the world. So given the importance of this day, what can you do to make this day very special for your mom? Let’s take a look.
http://www.kidsturncentral.com/ holidays/mothers/momday.htm is the first site you should visit for ideas on how to make this day special. Here you can learn how to make special door knobs to hang on her door, print her a ‘World’s Best Mom’ certificate, learn how to plant a sunflower for her or send her a wonderful E-Card. Plus, plenty of more exciting activities await you at this site.
Another great website you can visit for more crafty ideas is http://www.dltk-kids.com/crafts/ mom/. Here you can learn how to make coloured carnations, read through Mother’s Day poems, print out bookmarks and colouring pages or follow the tips of the Mother’s Day Recipes and surprise your mom with a breakfast in bed. http://www.kidsdomain.com/holiday/mom/ is another site that you can visit for more such fun ideas.
If you’re looking for something beyond ordinary gift giving and really want to surprise your mom then you should go to http:// www.amazingmoms.com/htm/holiday_mothersday.htm. The site features amazing crafts that kids can make including a pendant, songs that one can learn and sing to mom on her day and for slightly older children, a complete list of gifts and ideas that they can make to make the day special including decorated soap bars, potted plants, personalised clock, and many more. Here’s one song that I really liked on the website and I think you might like to sing to your mommy too. It’s sung to the tune of ‘Brother John’, a very popular nursery rhyme. It goes like:
I Love Mommy,
I Love Mommy,
Yes, I do, yes, I do.
Mommies are for hugging, (Hug self)
Mommies are for kissing, (Blow a kiss)
I love you, yes I do. (Point to mother)
Don’t you think that this can make any mom’s day special.
Other good websites that you can visit are http://www.billybear4kids. com/holidays/mother/mom.htm (I especially loved the cards factory) and http://www.enchantedlearning. com/crafts/mothersday/ where you can learn to make a butterfly card, tissue paper flowers, make a book to present to your mom and indulge in many more fun activities.
You can also visit http://akidsheart.com/holidays/mday/mmain.htm and http://www.dltk-holidays. com/mom/printables.html to make coupons, download mommy screen savers, or play online games and puzzles with Mom. To send amazing virtual cards to your mom, I would recommend http://www.123greetings.com/events/mothers_day/.
Finally, remember that even if you could not manage to do any of these, perhaps just saying ‘I Love You, Mom’ on that day, is the only thing that your mother might want to hear from you. Afterall, that’s why she’s so great and even our religion has said ‘Paradise lies under the feet of the Mother’. This is the day when she really deserves to know how much she is loved, so do go and tell her that and make this Mother’s Day for her, a day to remember.
