A special day for mom
Every year on the second Sunday of May, the world celebrates the women who nurture and raise us and our siblings, provides us with the most delicious foods that we can eat, kisses our tears away when we’re scared or hurt and is the best friend we can ever have. Who is she? Readers, we’re talking about none other than our mothers and Mother’s Day is the one day when you can thank your mom in a very special way for just being her.
You know, Mother’s Day is not exactly a new day as many of us might believe. Mother’s Day is a very very old celebration and can be traced as far back as ancient Greece to the spring celebrations in honour of Rhea, the Mythical Mother of the Greek gods. It was also celebrated in the 1600s in England, where there used to be a day called “Mothering Sunday” which honoured all the mothers of England.
However, the Mother’s Day that the world now celebrates, basically originated in the United States and was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Ms Howe would hold organised Mother’s Day meetings in Boston, Massachusetts ever year. From then onwards, the practice of setting aside a special day for mothers spread to all the countries of the world.
