A bad friend

By Muhammad Muneer Tariq

When he opened his eyes he found himself under the shade of the neem tree; then he realised that he was in the backyard of his uncle’s house. Mustafain’s parents had died even before his second birthday. His uncle brought him to his house and raised him as his son. His uncle was un-married, enjoying the life of a bachelor.

Now Mustafain was 18 and had passed his Inter examination. His uncle who was a superintendent in the police department was very proud to see him progressing. He often thought that like him Mustafain will also join the police force some day but Mustafain unlike him was attracted by sports and wanted to see himself the best sportsman ever.

When he joined university Mustafain made a new friend named Rameez. Rameez was kind of a bad kid who used to smoke a lot and do wrong things; calling people names and pulling their legs was Rameez’s favourite hobby. He was a tiny guy who looked like a kid. Gradually he became Mustafain’s best friend.

Mustafain’s uncle was not happy with his friendship with Rameez; he doubted that Rameez could harm Mustafain. But despite his uncle’s anger Mustafain continued his friendship with Rameez who was keen to make Mustafain smoke! Rameez tried hard and succeeded in luring Mustafain towards smoke, who gradually became addicted to smoking. God knows what Rameez did with those cigarrates he had.

After some time Mustafain felt that he was no longer interested in sports activities, instead he was becoming weaker and weaker. He always felt strong desire for those cigarettes which initially Rameez used to give him free of cost but now he was charging for then.

Mustafain got so much addicted to the cigarettes that he was compelled to steal things from his own house in order to pay for them. His uncle was not aware of all this but when he noticed that things were being stolen from his house he became alert. He at once realised that there was something fishy; he was already worried about his nephews’ health. He asked Shahzaman, his assistant, to keep an eye on Mustafain while he was away.

Soon Shahzaman discovered that Mustafain himself was stealing and he decided to sort out why Mustafain was doing so. While investigating Shahzaman came to know that the root of all evils was Rameez. He told the superintendent that Rameez was providing Mustafain with drugs that were destroying his life; he further told him that behind Rameez there was a whole gang providing every sort of aid to him. The gang was known as “Kali family” in the underworld. After gathering all information Mustafain’s uncle meet his senior officers who decided to arrest the whole gang at once. While Mustafain was advised rest and given medication to overcome his addiction.

After a few days his uncle told Mustafain that the whole “Kali family” had been arrested. Initially Rameez was arrested who revealed the names of other member who were Raza, Salman and Ovais and the Don, bilal; all of them were later arrested. His uncle advised Mustafain to avoid bad company.

The uncle who himself had failed in his CSS exams was then very pleased to see Mustafain preparing for CSS after a couple of years, and prayed for his success.
