Miss sorry, Thank you, smile

By Sara Hasan

Once upon a time this smart little being came up with this smart little idea of winning people’s heart and getting away with all kind of stuff. She pushed forth her enemy at the first opportunity and got away with all, by rolling off her tongue to say “I’m sooooo… sorry”.

When given a ride that she loved the most she secured it for herself by a mere “Thank you” and the poor little guy putting all hard feelings aside went on to say “welcome forever”.

That stretching of her rosy little lips and a slight sight of her sparkling teeth made many fall on their knees and perceived her to be their need and Ah! That smile made the poor guy bear the Miss Sorry Thank you Smile, forever as his wife.

This gave a lesson to all foolish little guys who smartened up and never got swayed away with Miss Sorry Thank You Smile.

Gestures … the same old gestures owing to the high frequency with which they are used in our day to day life have lost their once influencing effect. Today they are used to display a mere conduct of formality, they are words or acts that have no link whatsoever with our feelings, they are words to which no meaning is attached. In fact, they are absolutely good for nothing as they do not fulfill the criteria of differentiating between speakers who actually mean it and those who use it merely as a formality to abide by the societal norms.

That rhythmic tone with which we used to say “Sooorrryyy Mam” in a rather dragging fashion in the classroom is something I clearly recall even today. It was always followed by a weird question, ‘Do you guys even know what the word ‘sorry’ means?’ To which we all gave our input but failed to please the teacher or give a satisfactory meaning until the session ended leading to her departure followed by giggles of girls and mimicking of guys.

I’m sure we have all experienced times when we are rather forced to utter these monosyllables of Sorry, Thanks and Welcome and to pass out a fake smile. However, at times we really really mean it but can’t reflect our credibility via using these hackneyed words and acts. So what’s the solution, after all it’s a problem frequently faced hence there ought to be a solution. Well there’s none that I know of. Perhaps there is a need for reincarnation of that smart little being, Miss Sorry Thank you Smile, so as to bring into play that emotional touch of hers yet again, but this time in a different and more effective strategy altogether. i
