Story Time: Overworked

By Sorath Shah

I would rather call the situation narrated below a mental disorder but the doctors termed it over-stress. This is what actually happened during my last summer holidays, and is something that I can never forget and whenever I think about it I just can’t help laughing loudly.

Last summer I went over to my cousin’s house to stay for a few days, because my summer vacations were on and renovations were also going on in my house. My elder cousin Bushra had completed her studies and was getting married in August till then she was working in a firm. Before my arrival at my aunt’s house she had gone to Islamabad to attend some important meetings. She arrived two days after my arrival. She looked horrible — almost like a zombie, had dark circles under her beautiful brown eyes and had become weak and looked tired. After a day or two she slowly got over her weird condition. But what did we know what was coming up for us.

One night in the middle of the night she woke up to go to the washroom. As she opened the door (I was wide awake) I heard her scream, she slammed the door shut and ran towards her bed buried herself in her sheets and started quivering. I asked her “Appi are you alright?” “Yes! No! Actually yes!” she exclaimed. I again asked her “Are you sure?”

“I….I saw a lizard in the bathroom!” It was then that I wasn’t able to control myself and without realizing the condition of my over worked cousin I burst into laughter. She stared at me and I ran out of the room and laughed the hell out of myself. Because it was vacation time my other cousins had not gone to sleep and were siting in the TV lounge. They asked me what the matter was, after catching my breath I told them the whole story. After that I went to my cousin’s room with her brother and made fun of her and kept on imitating what had happened.

Next morning I asked her why did she scream over a lousy lizard . She replied “I….I saw the lizard blinking on the wall!” That was then I just couldn’t hold it anymore and burst into laughter again and later brought her a cup of cold coffee to chill her. Later that afternoon I was standing in the kitchen with my aunt when my youngest cousin, Nadia, came running in and shouted that she needed a glass of water. At first I just stared at her and thought “Why in the world is she shouting? I could have given her water even if she didn’t shout!”

She literally snatched the glass and ran out of the room and headed toward Bushra baji’s room. I followed her thinking I might get to see another scene like last night. What I saw was even funnier. Bushra baji was sleeping while standing still with her cell phone in her hand and murmuring something in her sleep and no one was on the other end! Nadia spilled the glass of water on her face and then she woke up started to shout “Ahhhhhhhhhhh!”

I shook her “Baji! Are you alright?” She replied, “I m drowning, help me! Please! Help, or I will drown”. I was stunned for a second and again burst into laughter.

I went downstairs and asked my aunt to call a doctor. She was perplexed for a minute and then asked me “Beta but no one is sick in the house why do you want to call a doctor? Are you okay?”

I’m okay khala but Bushra baji isn’t. I think she has gone mad?” I replied unable to control my laugher.

Khala asked me in a worried tone “Why, what happened to her?” I told her to check for herself and again found her sleeping while standing. Khala got worried, she immediately called the doctor home and I went to call her fiancé (In case he might need another one).

The doctor asked about her previous record which was all clear and this was the first time she was acting so weird. Uncle came home and told the doctor about how she worked continuously over the past few days. The doctor smiled and told us all not to worry. “She would be completely fine; she is just over stressed and needs some rest for a few days. And just keep her away from work tension and she’ll be alright,” saying this he prescribed some tablets and left.

I was relieved as I thought she had really gone mad but this sure was some great experience for all of us. After she recovered Oh don’t ask what she did with me. i
