Young World

April 1, 2006

Cover Story: No more Saturdays for Young World

 Hi,
This is the last issue of Young World. We believe our young friends seek more pleasure in playing playstation, browsing on the net, listening to music on their latest ipod and of course watching TV than reading. Since past three months we did not receive a single contribution from any of you guys so we decided to bid you good bye. If you don’t like Young World then fine … because you know what? You don’t deserve Young World.

Bye

And you fell for it!
Come on now don’t give me that ‘obviously not’ look because you did believe it… ya you did … for a second… or for a millisecond but you DID. Ha! Now I consider the commencement of April a complete success, however that’s another thing that you might consider me as a crazy giant who even at the age of twenty can’t help fooling around with a set of gullible yet the most precious darlings of Young World. Well let me assure you I have all the right reasons to support my tomfooleries as a year full of the usually mundane 364 days definitely calls for pure merriment on April 1.

“The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.”
— Mark Twain

Who to crown?

There once was a small girl, named Sara, she sobbed and she mourned all Saturday long. Her school was off but her parents had to go to work, stuck at home with nothing to do she sat in a corner and got hell like bored.

Then one fine day she got a great idea and she sat on her PC and typed a letter in the name of Young World to all little folks and all little folks believed her prank. She danced and laughed with merriment and delight and waited for a chance to fall for another’s prank. So she wins the crown of starting off April Fool’s Day.

Ok… now that’s a bit crazy but can’t help because the world can’t come to a conclusion as to how the day originated. Basically no one knows exactly where, when, or why the celebration began. What we do tend to know is that references to ‘All Fool’s began to appear in Europe during the late Middle Ages. All Fool’s Day was a folk celebration and elite participation in it was minimal (which is why it’s so difficult to trace the exact origin of the day, because the people celebrating it back then weren’t the kind of people who kept records of what they did). But what is clear is that the tradition of a day devoted to foolery has ancient roots.

So since no one knows exactly where, when, or why the celebration began I guess we could give Sara the crown of starting it all.

April Fool poem
Small April sobbed I’m going to cry
Please give me a cloud to wipe my eye
Then April Fool she laughed instead
And smiled a rainbow overhead.

April Fool Smile
I always got agitated at the fact that all proverbs and statements are so boys oriented, for instance ‘leave no man alone’ , ‘all men are brothers’ but this one day I feel proud to devise the answer below .
Q: Who succeeds on hoaxing April 1?
A: Those who realize that to fool a fool one needs to be a fool himself

I did not want to restrict the smiling to the girls but my gender loyalty clouded all other instincts so couldn’t help.

Fool the great
Fortunately, or unfortunately April 1 is the day of realization that no matter how smart you are there lies a fool side to you. This other side that I talk about is not just discovered when you fall in for a prank but rather it’s more evident when you devise a prank that another falls for. Alas! Only a Fool the Great can be aware of another Fool the Tiny’s mindset.

However big the fool, there is always a bigger fool to admire him
— Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux

Now remember. . .
April 1 is all about playing pranks and swindling for pure merriment and fun. It’s great to have fun but don’t let the sound of your giggles be lowered by a high echo of mourning from the other end.

Make sure that your fun-filled prank does not really hurt another. Treat others as you would want them to treat you. Because surely those on whose expense you giggle and smile also have a right to smile back when realizing about their being the fools.

Now go and have a bit of harmless fun and make sure that smiles overshadow the few seconds of another’s realization of being a fool. While I sit back and wait for my chance of being made a fool because here is where the fun part lies.

Looking foolish does the spirit good
—John Updike
