Music: the emancipation of mimi
M ariah’s eighth album features a diverse variety of songs, from the beautifully cadenced ‘Fly like a bird’ to the upbeat and sanguine ‘Shake it off’. The 35-year old vocalist in her 15th year of stardom, after seven ruthlessly maligned albums, released the ultimate compilation of songs, which asserted by critics is the best she can congregate out of her glass-shattering voice.

The low-key It’s Like That marks the beginning in which Mariah laments over her broken relationship. The emotive and poignant Don’t forget about us is a real treat

However, contrary to the down-tempo tracks, there are some not-up-to-the-scratch albeit listenable songs too, like To the floor featuring Nelly and Say. Nonetheless, redemption comes later in the form of Stay the night, a Kanye West production that successfully showcases Mimi’s range and is perhaps one of her most sanguine tracks. Unfortunately it is followed by Get Your Number featuring Jermaine Dupri. Despite Mariah’s feeble endeavours to wring something out of the song, the track is one of the worst on the album.

The throwaway Your Girl could have been a great hit if only it wasn’t indicative of Carey’s voice straining during the chorus to summon the profundity the song required.

More likeable are the 70’s Mine Again and the Wright production I Wish I Knew. All in all, the album featured Mariah Carey at her best. “The Emancipation of Mimi” managed to bag three Grammy’s including Best Song of the Year for the deserving We Belong Together. So…what are you waiting for? Go, beg your dad for your allowance (which was probably due last week), rush to the nearest music store, grab a copy of this pleasurable album and look forward to a buoyant weekend. Ciao!
