As spring approaches the fields are graced with blooming yellow mustard flowers which reminds one that it’s a time to celebrate. This season is marked by sprinkling of kites over Lahore skies and boisterous rooftop parties.
Bahar Mela 2006, an 18-day spring festival started on March 5. But it was sad to see that the decades old Lahori cultural festival of Basant — an international event — this year fell prey to the Punjab government’s Prohibition of Kite Flying Ordinance 2006. Scratching of the kite festival from the Spring Festival activity schedule was due to the number of deaths and injuries being caused by glass glazed kite strings which have been prohibited. However, the Supreme Court ordered a relaxation in this rule from February 25 to March 10.
Basant this year was not celebrated in Lahore on March 11 and 12 in the true spirit. Though gloom hung over the city until late on Basant night as Lahoris waited for an announcement of ban relaxation, but to no avail. However, even the ban did not stop enthusiasts. When the centre of attraction — a musical night was sparked off, violating all norms of decency after the fireworks display at Haveli Asif Jah, attended by President and other dignitaries, the people of nearby areas thought the ban had been lifted and were overjoyed. These citizens began aerial firing to express their joy. Despite the alleged brutality of Lahore police to enforce the anti-kite flying law in the provincial metropolis, Lahoris, particularly residents of the Walled City, celebrated Basant with fervor and traditional zeal flying colourful kites, displaying fireworks and dancing on their roofs, totally ignoring the Punjab Government’s ban. There was a rush of people at parks making arrangements of musical and dance shows and an electronic fireworks display to rejoice.
Even though government ban prevailed, parties were thrown at home for guests coming from abroad. To evade arrest, kite lovers skipped the idea to fix lights. Enthusiasts resorted to aerial firing, loud mouth slogans, drumbeats, and stereo at high velocity and fire crackers.
The spring festival ended on March 23 but the Food and Crafts Festival will continue till March 31 at the Race Course Park. Educational and entertainment events at the Bahar Mela included an army band display, a pet show, national songs and tableaus for children, spring poetry contest, art competition, flower show, and the children’s Lahore parade. It is note worthy that this year’s festival’s theme is ‘Adopt a family’ because of the October 8 earthquake.
