Sitting at her desk with pen in hand, the girl seemed to be lost in thought but also obviously distressed. A while later she pushed aside the paper from in front of her, kept down her pen and switched on the PC. As soon as she hit the keyboard it seemed as if she has revived her thoughts and it did not take her long to finish her work.
Why did she not use the computer in the first place, you may ask? Well, she would have if she hadn’t been specifically asked to submit her report in her own hand, and not a printout. She says her mind only starts working when she is facing the monitor. Then how did she submit her report? Smart soul. She wrote down what she had keyed into her computer, and, presto, she had a report written in her own hand.
It is just a matter of habit. There were times when we were quite comfortable with paper and pen as we had not become used to working on computers. But they now seem to have replaced the traditional tools of writing. Now we often consider it a hassle to write and prefer to do all our work on the computer.
But this girl’s story also tells us that we should not become slaves to our habits. It is not only the use of computers. It can be any habit that you may have picked up. You should have enough confidence in yourself to be able to try out alternatives. You will find yourself more in command and more efficient.
Just ask this girl what she would have done if her computer had crashed and her deadline was close.
