MOVIE: Batman — the animated series

Since the introduction of Bob Kane’s Batman in 1939, the Caped Crusader has been seen in comics, TV series and in movies but the impact Warner Brothers Animated Series leaves is remarkable. In this 4 DVD Boxset of Batman: The Animated Series, the World’s Greatest Detective manages to fight delirious villains of all sorts ranging from The Joker, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, The Riddler, Catwoman, the Scarecrow to Poison Ivy, the Sewer King, Killer Croc, the Clock King and the Mad Hatter. Packaged in this Volume-I are 28 episodes of the first season as many get confused by thinking that this is the full first season which it is not.

This series, due to its impeccable dialogues, chirpy storylines and of course Kevin Conroy’s voice as Batman/Bruce Wayne, opened the door for Superman: The Animated Series and the Justice League. Thanks to the brilliance of creators Bruce Timm and Eric Rodomski, this series has been so understandable that anyone can view any episode, without relying on what came earlier. The first episode in this collection On Leather Wings saw the most horrific of all villains — Man Bat — appear for the first time. Batman stops him and in the process bleeds for the first — and probably the last time! Joker makes his appearance in Christmas with the Joker where he kidnaps all those Batman cares about and gives the Caped Crusader barely hours to find his hideout or else. All the other villains make their entry in subsequent episodes with Batman defeating all in every circumstance imaginable!

This DVD Boxset is loaded with special features such as The Dark Knight’s First Night, which is a pre-TAS animation, audio commentaries on two episodes namely On Leather Wings and Heart of Ice and an 18-minute feature titled, Batman: The Legacy Continues which carries interviews of the creative team behind the series. Then there is a Tour of the Batcave which covers Batman, his Utility Belt, the Bat Vehicles and Alfred Pennyworth. On selection, an audio description and a Bat Computer File option gives you random scenes of the selected item while the trailers of Challenge of the Superfriends, Justice League: Starcrossed and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman make you want more on DVD. So buy it before it disappears just like the Dark Knight!
