Light up your space...

By Meera Jamal

Have you run out of ideas to decorate your room? Well think again! There are many ways like tiding up your room, rearranging the furniture, changing the colour scheme, adding posters, etc. to give the same room a new look. But have you thought about giving it a rather classy or completely funky look with the help of lamps, chandeliers and sconces? No, then give it a try, it is worth it.

You will find numerous shops that exhibit a variety of lamps and chandeliers that can fit into your budget. Do ask your parents to accompany you as haggling can be of great help while buying lights. It would be even smarter that you check out a few shops before buying anything as not only would you have a greater variety to choose from but also you will have an idea of the price range.

If you fancy buying incandescent, fluorescent, halogen or full-spectrum lights, you must understand what set up they suit the best. For example, rooms without much sunlight can benefit from full-spectrum lights as they are bright and give your room a warm effect. It is almost like direct sunlight — cooler and clearer than incandescent yet warmer than fluorescent. Cool-toned lights look best when the room is well lit. Warm-toned lights look best in the rooms where there is lesser sunlight. Halogen is an excellent choice for brightly-lit interiors. Incandescent lights or even candlelight will complement low-lit rooms best. As the weather in our country is mostly hot and is bright and sunny throughout the year, therefore, it would be a smart move to opt for not so bright lights.

Chandeliers are more of a classy choice. You can find them in various colours as well, but nothing looks as chic and grand as the crystal cut chandeliers. They bring instant glamour to any room. They are also made out of wrought iron, brass, wood and ceramic. They are pricey, yes, and therefore the cheapest one you find the better. The ceramic ones can be found in a variety of shapes and colours, and they are not as expensive as the glass ones. Sorry, no cartoon figures could be found in these.

This is your domain, where you can find cartoon characters reigning on the metallic or ceramic bodies of the lamps. There are three or more kinds of lamps. Study lamps and table lamps are the popular ones whereas floor lamps are trendy, and give your room a funky look. The floor lamps or what some shopkeepers refer to as pedestal lamps, are usually four to five feet tall. They are to be seen in usually dark colours and intriguing geometrical shapes. Study lamps not only look good on your study table but also do remember to plug them in when you are studying or doing your homework, it would keep your eyes less strained. There is one more type of lamp that I forgot to tell you guys about — touch lamps. Those that I have seen were moulded into cute vegetable and fruits, fountain-like and many more. They are nice to play with, as well as work as a decoration piece .

Sconces, also known as wall brackets, not only look good but are available in cute shapes too. These wall brackets are not only cheap but add a lot of colour to your room. They could be as cheap as Rs100 and there are some that cost about thousands of rupees.

The other option is the lights that are called shelf lights. They can be fitted into your bookshelves. Trophies, if you have won any, or books or toys for that matter that you are proud of owning, can be well displayed with the help of these lights. They are not too expensive. Keep the wall colour and your room colour theme in mind before buying any kind of light fittings.

The best strategy is to spend less money and wisely, whereas the lights should be bought keeping in mind the arrangement and how well lit the room is. Buying trendy lights can be fun, and a not so expensive way to lighten up your living space.
