Once upon a time there was a little boy who was intelligent, friendly and extremely responsible. His parents never had to pester him to do his homework or any other chore that was assigned to him. The little boy made sure that he fulfilled everything assigned to him amicably.
Being the youngest, the rest of his family members — brothers and sisters, uncles and aunts doted upon him as well. “My gem”, his sister would call him proudly; “My pet”, his aunt would say. Since he was loved very much and since the family knew that he was a sensible child, all his legitimate wishes were fulfilled. Money was at his disposal whenever he wanted to go out with friends. All he had to do was ask and he’d be given enough to have a great time.
Slowly and gradually, as the little boy grew older he became more interested in friends than in his education. He started to bunk classes and would hang around with his friends until late at night. Night matches and spending weekends with friends playing matches all night long became the norm. No one in the family realized that the damage had begun. The boy would stay up all night and sleep all day. He was no longer his vivacious self and had lost a lot of weight. His teachers would also complain about him for not taking any interest in his work due to which his grades dropped drastically.
“Why are you so completely lost?” his uncle would ask, to which he would say nothing, just smile. Everyone was concerned about him; his actions were getting a little mysterious. The boy who was always cheerful had lost his smile. He remained irritated and drastic mood swings were experienced by him. What was wrong, nobody knew.
One day as his mother cleaned his closet, she found some cigarettes and pills in his cupboard. The mystery was solved. When asked why he did such a thing all he said was: “For the heck of it.”
