Are you on the painful threshold of deciding what career to opt for? And do you wish that your parents would stop hounding you to become a doctor or an engineer, as that is not what you probably want to take up? Do you run away when you meet an older relative who gives you his/her never-ending advice on choosing the right career?
If you are one of those who do want to become a doctor or an engineer then this article will not be of any interest to you. But if you are one of those who are career challenged, read on as I have researched some interesting and unusual career options that might be right up your street. All you need is guts to take them up and the courage to follow them through.
However, please be aware that some of these options might not be monetarily lucrative initially but the inner satisfaction you would derive from these is going to be immense.
ANTHROPOLOGIST: If you are one of those rare students who actually enjoyed studying geography and history and fantasized of being Columbus, then anthropology could be an exciting career option for you. Anthropologists study social interactions and human cultures that include art, music and literature.
AROMATHERAPIST: Are you looking to calm yourself and others’ lives? Just think about it, as pursuing aromatherapy could be an interesting career for you. Aromatherapy is therapy using pleasantly scented botanical oils for relief of pain and removing tension.
COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHER: You need to have a good eye, imagination and creativity to pursue commercial photography. Commercial photographers take pictures of buildings, landscapes, and products for catalogs, advertisements and books.
CHEF: If you love helping out in the kitchen, creating your own recipes and are able to appreciate well-cooked food, then being a chef could be an interesting career choice for you. Chefs cook a wide variety of foods in restaurants and hotels.
CHOREOGRAPHER: If you love dancing and music and you know that you can definitely do a better job than our local film choreographers, then choreography is for you. Choreographers create and visualize new dance routines and teach them to dancers.
COMPUTER GAME DEVELOPER: Your world revolves around computer games and you don’t want to be anywhere else. Well guess what? You can turn your passion into a life-long career. As a computer game developer you create new games for home computers.
DIPLOMAT: A career in diplomacy gives a chance to travel and interact with people of different cultures. It will give you an opportunity to carry out important responsibilities and represent your country overseas. If you have knowledge of world history, geography, governments, political systems and social issues then this maybe the job for you.
DISC JOCKEY: Also known as DJs, they play music, chat, deliver news, weather or sports or hold conversations with celebrities or call in listeners. You just have to be familiar with the latest music or specific genre of music and have good oral communication skills to make it as a DJ.
FUND RAISER: If you have a wide circle of networking contacts and have used them to raise funds and organized amateur fundraisers for your school and college, then fundraising could be your calling for life.
HORTICULTURIST: Do you have a strong affinity towards nature? Then being a horticulturist would be an interesting career path for you. Horticulturists not only specialize in growing flowers, fruits and vegetables, but are also involved in landscape design and turf management.
HEALTH JOURNALIST: If science is your favourite subject, but you don’t want to become a doctor; health journalism is a career option that you could look into. As a health journalist you write specifically about health related issues and create public awareness.
HOMEOPATH: With a growing interest in alternative therapies, homeopathy is a very popular alternative career option these days. In homeopathy, patients are treated with minute doses and medicines made of natural ingredients that have no side effects.
INTERPRETER: If you enjoy travelling and have a flair for languages then interpreting could be a career possibility. An interpreter has to translate accurately from one language to another.
MUSEUM CURATOR: Curators are responsible for managing collections of objects of artistic, scientific and historical value. So if you have an avid interest in history, like attention to detail, possess creative flair and good communication skills then why not explore the possibility of becoming a curator.
NEWSCASTER: If you have a passion to tell the world what’s going on, witness dramatic events, talk to interesting and famous people, then you could seriously think of becoming a newscaster. Newscasters don’t have to sit on their desks all day, they even get a chance to go to places where the action is.
OCEANOGRAPHER: Oceanographers study all aspects about oceans. These guys also work with instruments and equipment that requires precision. If you have good maths skills, problem solving and research skills then dive into this field.
STRESS CONSULTANT: As the pressures of modern life increases, the need for stress consultants is becoming greater. If you are one of those to whom everybody turns to in times of their crisis and you are able to calm them, then stress consultancy could be an ideal career for you.
SET DESIGNER: If you have a keen sense of colour and detail, a sense of balance and an appreciation of beauty, with good communication skills then set designing is a possibility for you. Set designers design and create sets for movie, television and theatre productions.
TRAVEL WRITER: If you enjoy travelling, meeting new people and eating different cuisines then being a travel writer is a dream job. Travel writers write about their experiences of any journey that they have undertaken from an interesting point of view.
TECHNICAL WRITER: A technical writer writes instructions manuals to help people use a product or a service. If you can communicate in writing then you can easily become a technical writer and the best part is that no degree is required to become a technical writer!
VETERINARIAN: If you love animals and want to be associated with them for the rest of your life, then being a veterinarian could be your ideal career option. An animal doctor or veterinarian can branch out into many other career options.
YOGA INSTRUCTOR: A yoga instructor teaches the ancient Indian art of fitness called yoga. Yoga is a highly popular fitness regimen practiced by singer Madonna and actress Gwyneth Paltrow. If you are familiar with the intricacies of yoga then you can benefit others by becoming a yoga instructor.
With so many interesting and different career options available, you no longer have to even think about medical and engineering professions.
