Communication technology refers to all devices and systems and things used to send messages, order, to link and interact with others. Communication technology is playing both a positive and a negative role simultaneously in today’s world.
The most important advantage of advances in this field is that it has shrunk the world to a “global village”. Now geographical distances are nothing. People can live far away in foreign countries and at the same time keep in touch with their relatives in their motherland through technologies such as the Internet, phones, faxes, etc.
Telecommunication advances have come as no less than a blessing for the business community. Now messages can be sent within a split second. They can order and interact with other companies sitting in their office, this means that they don’t have to post a letter and then wait for 10-15 days to get a reply. The ratio of working time and effort has decreased to quite an extent and this process is likely to continue in future. This will allow people to give more time to their work or even to their families.
Importantly, these advances allow cheap and effective communication. This implies that more and more people can start their business from their homes and be their “own bosses”. If in future, this trend sets in then the major problem of unemployment will be reduced effectively.
If we see the other side of the picture, we’ll see that in the future, negative trends will also flourish.
The pace of life would become faster, demanding more of you and above all, it would not allow you any freedom. Wherever you’d go people would be able to contact you on the mobile, and in future even on video phones, so you wouldn’t be able to steal a few peaceful moments for yourself or concentrate on what you are doing without any interruption, and there certainly, would be no privacy.
Secondly, these trends tend to demolish the sense of respect and mannerism on certain occasions. For example, when people are in a party or a meeting, they talk less with people present and more on mobiles. This means people are and will become more lax about social norms.
In addition, open exhibition of gadgets gives a sense of depravity to the poor whereas some people only buy such equipment because it’s in fashion.
Moreover, some evil minds use the Internet to promote obscenity and immorality. And the authorities can’t actually curb these activities. Telecommunications is also used to promote hatred, intolerance and prejudice.
I think that in future, the advances in communication are actually going to do much good to humanity, however, there are drawbacks as well. I think nothing makes a thing good or bad, but the way it is used.
