Childhood memories

By Mohammad Bilal Munir

I was a pretty chubby baby who waded like a duck... thanks to the pampers! However, when it came to driving, I was the expert — speeding around the house in all kinds of fancy cars, taking swift and sharp turns, reversing dangerously and finally, tumbling down with expertise.

Sometimes, on weekends, the family puts on what we call “Baby movies,” and shares some of the most funny and thrilling “family moments.”

November 15, 1991: seven and a half pounds and 22 inches long (lying down). Now I am 100 lbs and 5ft. It took nearly 13 years to grow up!

There are shots of me hitting the ball all over “Auntie’s Park” in Clifton while Abbo jogged and Mama ran hard to catch up with my baby sister; enjoying camel rides at the beach; jumping up and down, trying to get to all the rides in Sindbad; scaring Fatima with various tools — plastic hockey sticks and cricket bats, making horrid faces, pinching and pushing when no one was looking; writing on the walls with crayons and markers; putting together a jigsaw puzzle or Lego; watching “Aa, Ba, Ca...” and Sesame Street videos; sitting on the floor in my vest and shorts and sucking mangoes and gobbling ‘buzas’ (watermelon); refusing to get out of the bath tub filled with tons of floating toys; sleeping peacefully surrounded by dozens of cuddlies; singing “Happy Birthday...” for myself and my sister every year...

Countless interesting memories... But my favourite shots are the ones in which I am held prisoner between my mama’s knees as she holds back my head and my father forces that hateful liquid down my throat; I spit in anger. And the scene is repeated once again...

I’m given antibiotics camouflaged in milk and red Sherbet. I, the smart child, take a sip and the feeder flies down the room! Mama says she had to buy several bottles of the same medicine to complete one course.

I still hate medicines, love cricket, still tease my sis, eat mangoes with relish, enjoy long showers, love to sleep cuddled with mama... I guess my N-O-W is only an extension of my childhood.
