We love to hate them

By Sahar Majid

Villains have always played an interesting role in the movies. Despite their evil acts, people love them and enjoy their wickedness. Ever since Walt Disney created Steamboat Willie and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, there have always been Disney villains reigning down on a hero’s parade. Villains always fight the hero/heroines and make their life a misery. They put our innocent heroes and heroines into trouble but still we like them… we love their bad deeds… we adore their dishonesty … and we cherish their ugly faces. Below is the list of top 15 Disney villains rated by their fans.

Prince John
Robin Hood
Voice: Peter Ustinov

With his brother Richard away on crusade, Prince John is the thumb-sucking cry-baby in power in England. Easily outwitted by the charming outlaw Robin Hood, Prince John may be a more comedic villain, but his intentions are clearly not good. His mantra (to make the rich even richer) provides direct contrast to Robin Hood’s actions which are carried out with the poor in mind.

Hopper

A Bug’s Life
Voice: Kevin Spacey

Hopper from A Bug’s Life is one of the most effective Disney villains. He knows that he is frightening to the ants, and he makes the most of that. He puts his henchmen to good use, but he’s not afraid to do some dirty work himself.

Kevin Spacey did some amazing voice work here; the character comes across as cunning and completely merciless. Hopper is the ultimate intimidator, and he deserves his place in the pantheon of great Disney villains.

Shan-Yu
Mulan
Voice: Miguel Ferrer

Shan-Yu is one of the most chillingly cold Disney villains in history, with one of the most distinctly frightening villain voices in many a year. His ruthlessness is most effectively conveyed when it is so violent that it goes unseen, cut away from and implied. His actions show how truly creepy this guy is, and it will bring a shudder to even the most immune moviegoer.

The Queen of Hearts

Alice in Wonderland
Voice: Verna Felton

One word: psychic. The Queen of Hearts is probably the maddest inhabitant of Wonderland. Her answer to everything is a beheading! She’s also rather comic and leads the way for comic villains like Prince John and Cruella de Vil.

Shere Khan

The Jungle Book
Voice: George Sanders

The jungle may be Mowgli’s home, which makes Shere Khan a type of powerful and dreaded relative. Khan is a menacing tiger and without him The Jungle Book might well be straight musical / comedy. But his presence, as one of the most horrible Disney villains, adds depth and suspense to the film.

Gaston

Beauty and the Beast
Voice: Richard White

In many ways, Gaston is the most versatile Disney villain. He goes from being a comical character, to being kind of a jerk, to being a complete villain. This progression of the character throughout the movie lets him fit in perfectly with the movement of Beauty and the Beast’s story, which also goes from being somewhat light-hearted in the beginning to being darker as the plot moves on.

Lady Tremaine

Cinderella
Voice: Eleanor Audley

Lady Tremaine reminds me of The Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs because of all the evil she has minus the magic. Lady Tremaine cares more for her daughters than for her stepdaughter, Cinderella. She treats her like a slave and not like an equal person. She’s a very cunning villain and very evil that makes her all the better to frighten you.

Hades

Hercules
Voice: James Woods

Hades wanted to rule the world but had one little problem — Hercules. Why did Hades want more power? Hades was already a lord of the underworld, what more did he want. But Hades was a flaming villain.

The fabulous voice performance by James Woods has also contributed to the character’s popularity. Who would have thought that James Woods would even imagine such an off-beat and unique characterization?

Captain Hook
Peter Pan
Voice: Hans Conreid

He’s one of Disney’s first attempts at an entirely comical villain. Captain Hook is one of the most memorable antagonists in any of Walt Disney’s films, because he’s so funny, but at the same time, he can be viewed as a real threat to the hero. I find this really effective, because Hook gives the kids in Peter Pan a feeling of intimidation at times, but in the end, they feel confident that they can beat him.

Cruella De Vil
101 Dalmatians
Voice: Betty Lou Gerson

Cruellla is another great Disney villain. She wanted to make coats out of the Dalmatian puppies. She even bribed Roger with money for his puppies but he turned down the offer. She does everything in her power to kill those puppies, even destroys her own car. Cruella De Vil is really a big devil. Everybody hates her yet loves her.

Ursula
The Little Mermaid
Voice: Pat Carroll

The great witch of the sea, Ursula is an intimidating octopus set on overthrowing the MerKing Triton and ruling the seas herself. To execute this plan, she uses Triton’s youngest daughter, Ariel, as prey.

Through a web of manipulations and empty promises, Ursula does her best to foil the life of the righteous in order to advance her own wicked desires.

Enormous and frightening, her appearance and actions rank Ursula among Disney’s very best villains.

The Queen
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Voice: Lucille La Verne

Literally, the one that started it all, the wickedest villain of all is the evil Queen. The Queen was so jealous of her stepdaughter, Snow White, that she wanted her dead and wanted her heart in a box. In order to be the fairest lady in the world, the Queen plots to have her stepdaughter murdered. Her cunning transformation into an old witch allows her to peddle a poisoned apple to unsuspecting Snow White, an illustrative act of her wickedness.

Scar
The Lion King
Voice: Jeremy Irons

There are few things more wicked than the betrayal of one’s loving family. In The Lion King, a great tragedy unfolds from the perspective of a protagonist whose life has been shattered at the hands of his own uncle, Scar.

Consumed with jealousy and lust for power, he executes his plan in the hope to become the king of the Pridelands. Not only does he provide us with one of Disney’s finer musical numbers, but his slender physique and eerily deceptive attitude generate some of the film history’s most wicked lines and, indeed, most wicked villains.

Jafar
Aladdin
Voice: Jonathan Freeman

Jafar is one of the most favourite villains of Disney because he is so treacherous, so maniacal and he is so calm about everything for the most time and ends up losing his temper and when he does, he becomes someone to be feared.

He’s the only villain who underwent so many transformations: he goes from vizier, “the old guy” (not a transformation but a disguise and as such a different form), to sultan, to sorcerer, to cobra, to the most powerful genie ever.

Jonathan Freeman’s delightful vocal performance as Jafar really helps the character ooze evil.

Maleficent
Sleeping Beauty
Voice: Eleanor Audley

Maleficent succeeds with all the wickedness one would expect from Disney’s reigning villainess. Draped in black with flames of purple and red, her green-toned face accented by her well-defined jaw, and her head topped with devil’s horns, Maleficent no doubt looks the part. Sleeping Beauty is among Walt Disney’s finest films, and at its heart is a story fuelled by heroes’ efforts to wage war against this force of evil. With each strike of her rod and spoken line of cunning villainy, Maleficent is the embodiment of wickedness. i
