Kiki’s Delivery Service is a cartoon movie directed and produced by Hayao Miyazaki (whose film Spirited Away won the award for Best Animated Film in 2003). In 1989 it hit the screens for the first time as Majo no takkyubin in Japanese, literally meaing “Witch’s
Express Mail”, the movie has been released by Disney on DVD with both Japanese and English language options.
It’s about a teenage girl who has to leave her home to train herself to become a full-fledged witch. Kiki travels on her broom with her chatty black cat, Jiji, to a beautiful far off city, where she meets a kind lady baker, Osono, who encourages Kiki to start her delivery business in which the mean of transport for Kiki is her broom. Kiki makes new friends like Tombo and Ursula and becomes a real star when she saves Tombo’s life. The movie is very nice with the ups and downs of life and realistic effects. It’s a really good movie to pass your free time.
Beautifully detailed animation and the rich designs of the seaside town of red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets add to the sense of wonder.i
