MUSIC: Hilary duff

By Tariq Khan

Teen star Hilary Duff recently released her second album on her 17th birthday. The pop-singer’s self-titled album is just as good if not surpasses her first one, ‘Metamorphosis’. The first album related to all the experiences that teenagers go through at that stage of life. Slow ballads like Where Did I go right? as well as fast, hard party songs like A Little Voice and Party Up made the album a hit. You also find some sad and tragic songs and a few fun filled tracks like, Sweet Sixteen and Anywhere but Here or edgy ones like Come Clean and Why Not.

Her younger fans (ages 12-16), may prefer the first album to the latest one. “I definitely don’t want to abandon the younger audience,” Duff explains. “But this album is more mature.”

The new album has twenty tracks with songs like Fly and Someone’s watching Over Me, which drive across an important message that in life you must believe in yourself if you want to be successful. In Underneath this Smile, Dangerous to Know and Hide Away, for example, Duff deals with all the horrible secrets and terrors of the world and tells that even the truth can be dangerous at times.

This album also boasts of fast numbers like Getaway, My Generation and Rock this World. There are two songs in

which Duff describes the nature of superficial people in Haters and Our Lips are sealed. This song features Hilary’s sister, Haylie Duff, and both of them have great voices.

The song I Am describes the personality of a typical teenaged girl. Jericho is about a friendship that is about to be broken. Weird and Do you Want me have a fun and funky sort of feel to them, and are likely to do very well on the charts.

Duff has already made a video of Fly and Our Lips are sealed. The writers of her songs are the same people who wrote music for Avril Lavigne, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Beyoncé. Like her first album, this one also has reached No 2 on the Billboard Charts.
