We all would like to lose weight and get in shape with minimal effort. That’s how fitness infomercials on television make billions each year. They promise miraculous results without making you break a sweat.
If you are not fooled by their claims then you know you have to work at getting in shape and losing unwanted pounds. So where do you go for a challenging workout? Gyms are too expensive, perhaps you can’t get permission to go, or sometimes they aren’t offering you the right timings if you have school and tuitions. And in Pakistan its very hard to keep up walking and running all seasons. Sometimes its just too hot. Plus, this might be difficult for girls.
But don’t lose heart. You don’t need to depend on good weather or an expensive gym to get a workout. You can work out at home and it won’t cost you a bomb. You don’t need to buy expensive home fitness gyms either. One of the best things about working out at home is that you can do it when you like, in a private place where people don’t stare at you and you can immediately jump into the shower afterwards.
It’s a good idea to set out one room in the house for a home gym if possible. Perhaps you could convince the older members of your family to take part in the project. But sometimes the TV room can be used if you are following a workout on video. If you have a basement make sure it isn’t too dark and damp. But any room you pick should be well ventilated and have lots of light. When you exercise and sweat if you don’t air out the room it will start to stink pretty soon.
Some people set up basketball hoops in their front drive or lawn or in the compound for their apartment block. It’s also possible, since Pakistan makes some of the best sports goods in the world, to go to Saddar and buy nets for throwball or badminton.
By now many magazines and television programmes have special segments on exercises that you can do without using any machinery or dumbbells. You just need to make clippings of them to create your own exercise regime. Sometimes all you need is a clean sheet to make a mat on the floor for stomach crunches or leg exercises or you can use a stable chair to work against for some arm exercises. If you can afford it you could also invest in a foldable treadmill or stepmaster-type machine. But considering our rather sedentary lifestyles it’s a good idea to make exercise your new year’s resolution.
