Young artist to represent Pakistan in international art competition
A budding young artist from Karachi will visit London representing Pakistan and will have his artwork displayed in a celebration at Tate Modern as part of the Unilever Intentional School’s Art Project on January 19, 2005, alongside other artists from all over the world. The winning piece is entitled ‘Friendship’ and was created by 7-year-old Maisam Ali, a student of Shahwilayat School. A judge termed it “a very strong concept” while commenting on Maisam’s piece. “I’ll probably remember it all my life. Original and draws you to it”.
The International Schools Art Project, now in its fourth year, encourages young people from around the world to create a painting, a sculpture or even a small installation on a given theme. This year thousands of young artists from 15 countries around the world including Brazil, China, Colombia, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UK have created works of art on the theme ‘Connecting and Communicating’.
The judges were Gavin Neath, Chairman of Unilever UK, Kate Adie, international writer, broadcaster and journalist, Vicinity Todoli, Director of Tate Modern, Sarah Crompton, Arts Editor of the Daily Telegraph newspaper and Jan Pienkowski, artist and children’s illustrator.
An exhibition of selected international works will go on public display in the National Theatre foyer in London from February 4 - March 5, 2005. i
