As far as I believe, we came into this world to make the most of our qualities, for our good and the good of our fellow beings. In fact, man, the most eminent of all created things, was sent to this Earth to ponder; to think, to find out the ultimate truth and finally to make the best of his existence on his way to make this world a better living place for others to live in.
He made his utmost endeavours, fought a long fight against the destructive powers of nature, kept on struggling hard and finally the Stone Age man stepped into today’s “Cyber & Wireless Age” and the “Age of Violence & Terrorism”.
We should call ourselves a product of the latter, not mockingly but seriously. When the monster of terrorism is raising its head around us, when the leaders of the world, argue and fight over WMD, the bombs rock while guns spew, when the dreams of scores of children like us are marred by the menace of terrorism, when hundreds of protagonists of tomorrow are growing up amidst the tumult of religious extremism, when the calibre and qualities of many are succumbing to the monster of intimidation, why should we boast of being a creation of the former?
How can we satiate ourselves making the best of our existence, when our counterparts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kashmir and elsewhere are going through a painful and gory physical and mental trauma forcefully inflicted upon them by, sardonically speaking, the world bodies while justifying their war against violence and the destructive fight against terrorism?
Imagine the traumatizing photo of an innocent little Iraqi child crying with an eye split and lying bleeding on the ground, visualize the haunting green eyes so filled with hostility of Afghan children, envisage thousands of children in Kashmir living their lives with an unknown fear of losing their loved-ones to the men in khaki at any moment. Many such brutal instances of fright and terror envelop their ambiance with absolutely no hope of a better tomorrow. This is what one may pronounce as a bloody translation of their innocent dream of a happy, prosperous and serene life.
And surely this is what one may call the gory zenith of the struggle of humanity, too, which was initiated to create a better world for posterity. Who knew that it would be the humans themselves, who would be responsible for the eventual devastation of this planet.
So, this is where the fight for a better tomorrow is leading humanity to: Where nothing but a bleak cloud of revenge, hostility, hatred, terrorism, extremism, vengeance is overtaking all.
The reality is that neither is all this the fault of human efforts nor is this the case of fate as it is our efforts which impart direction to our destiny; but the dilemma is that we have lost contact with our own human qualities like patience, forgiveness, tolerance, love, affection, brotherhood, unity and harmony. Besides this, we don’t analyze our actions. We always look to others for answers but never care to look into our own hearts, never explore our own personality, and never think about discovering our very own self.
We look at the things from our eyes but never delve into them with our soul. We value human beings but do not love them.
We follow but don’t make the first move. Our heart is corrupt and our thoughts are immoral. We think about revenge but never care about the implications. We want to be ahead of time no matter what the cost. We don’t want to be united rather we wish to discover the world on our own. We wait for others to reform us but never think about bringing a change ourselves. In other words, we never make the most of what has been bestowed upon us.
Think for a moment; is it too late to mend ourselves? The answer is NO. Like every dark cloud has a silver lining around it, we can still make it only if we make the best of our qualities for the preservation and perpetuation of peace on this planet as there would be nothing left behind if the doves of peace migrate from our lives to the unknown lands, never to return. Let love, tolerance, forgiveness and patience lead the way. Let’s bury the hatred, let’s forget all about retaliation, let’s all realize that life lies in the policy ‘live and let live’ and peace is where ‘life lies.
Let’s start making the most of our qualities. Let’s be united, let’s forget all the differences, and let’s be one, an indivisible whole as together we can and together we must make this planet a better place.
Let’s promise ourselves, let’s make a pledge! Rafia Saleem
