Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are undoubtedly the most famous characters in English detective fiction. A lot has been written about them by different writers after Doyle’s death but The Sherlock Holmes Companion, compiled by Michael and Mollie Hardwick is one of the best Sherlock Holmes book by any author other than Doyle.
The book has been categorized in five sections namely Who’s Who, Plots of the Stories, A Sampler of Quotations, Mr Holmes and Dr Watson and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the ‘Who’s Who’ section, the goods, the bads and the ladies in Sherlock Holmes’ 56 short stories and four novels are discussed briefly in alphabetical order. From Action to Wright, Dr Moriarty to Milverton, all the characters have been well-described here so as to give the Arthur Conan Doyle-fans a chance to rediscover the magic the maestro created a century ago.
In the section aptly titled ‘Plots of stories’, all the 60 stories that made it to book form are summarized (without the ending of course!) along with their date of publication. The plots have been taken from different newspapers and magazines in which the Holmes stories appeared originally.
‘A Sampler of Quotations’, is the best section of the whole book as it provides the best ever quotes and dialogues that were rendered by both Holmes and Watson. The quotations are well categorized further according to subject.
In the next section, Mr Holmes and Dr Watson, the relationship and history of the two fictional characters is well-debated. So for those who don’t know how Dr Watson met Holmes for the first time or what did Holmes told Watson about his past, this section has all the answers. The last section tells the reader all about Dr Doyle and his transformation to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
This guide would have made even Doyle proud. It covers everything Doyle ever wrote of Holmes and would prove to be a great addition if you are a die hard fan of Sherlock Holmes.
