MOVIE: Lion King 1½

By Anum Ayub

Surprised or confused? This was the exactly my reaction to the unique name ever given to a cartoon flick. I mean everyone has heard of cartoon movie 1, 2 or 3 but not one and a half. This .5 has a very interesting background to it. Actually in Lion King all the incidents are very confusing (if thought about) — one was the appearance of “Timon and Pumbaa” out of nowhere at all. And that’s what this .5 refers to. This movie does not discuss much about Pumbaa’s history but a lot about Timon. Like Timon, being a smear cat, lived with his fellow creatures including his mom and uncle Max far away from the pride rock.

They lived in underground tunnels for safety from hyenas and Timon didn’t like the dark tunnels so he would go on breaking the ones his fellows built up and that’s how he came to leave his homeland in search of a better place that suited his taste.

On his way he meets the philosopher baboon who unfortunately uses a metaphor on Timon which fortunately introduce Pumbaa to him. From here onwards, together they searched for the place and came across the birth ceremony of Simba, Simba’s ”I can’t wait to be king”, the elephant graveyard, Scar’s home, the place where Mufassa died and finally they found their “Hakuna Matata”. It’s a movie with lots of fun and humour. It’s extremely colourful and has great songs specially Dig a tunnel and superb animation. It’s a must for all cartoon maniacs.
