Young World

November 20, 2004

Hi kids!

It’s time that we talk about you. You, the young people, are an important asset of the world and it is everyone’s responsibility to protect you and safeguard your future. To tell you of your rights, Universal Children’s Day is celebrated every year on November 20 – that means that today it’s your day. You can read about your rights in this week’s cover story and update your knowledge.

Meanwhile, we will talk about another day, i.e., the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB), a joint venture of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the International Council of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, based in USA. It is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of December; this year it will be observed on December 12. The day is held to highlight various issues relating to children. The global theme for this year’s ICDB is “Help build a safer world” and will focus on millions of children who are in danger of being caught up in conflict, exposed to forced labour, or are sexually exploited or have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Since it is you who are at risk we invite you to express your views on these subjects. Discuss the problems with your teachers, parents and friends and send your views to us not later by December 1. The selected article/opinions will be printed in the Young World that is due to come out on December 11.

If you are unaware of these problems or do not have much information about them, don’t worry. We care for you and don’t want you to be caught unawares and for this purpose have arranged articles especially written for you to learn and be aware of the issues that children around the world face. So be on the look out.

Let’s make this world a safer place for children.

Have a nice weekend!

Bye!

Ed
