MOVIE: Envy

By Asim Ali

Looking at the poster of this newly released Black and Stiller comedy, Envy, one might think that it would be a good laugh for the whole family but you will be sadly mistaken once you see it. In fact, the flick is pretty uneven and so dark that at times it’s very difficult to tell whether or not it’s supposed to be funny.

The story is not that strong either, it’s about two best friends Ben Stiller (Tim Dingman) and Jack Black (Nick Vanderpark) who are co-workers at a plant. Unlike Tim, who leads a modest life with dreams to save enough money to make a pool in his backyard, Nick is more of a dreamer who hopes to cash in on one of his wild ideas some day. One day Nick is struck by this crazy idea of making a spray that could evaporate dog’s poo and he named it Vapoorize. To Tim it was just another one of Nick’s insane ideas and he refuses to invest but to his surprise it did work this time. Nick soon became a millionaire and Tim was driven mad by jealousy as a result of which he looses his wife and almost his job. Out of frustration Tim plans to take revenge and does something that could end their friendship forever.

Writer Steve Adams and director Barry Levinson have totally failed to build up the action and circumstances to any kind of climax that is exciting. Adams doesn’t give Black or Stiller any good, sparkling dialogue to show us how well they get along or how much they care about each other. Black is left forcing everything, while Stiller overdoes his quiet, brooding character even when the craziness requires him to go into full panic.

If you are bored to death I wouldn’t recommend watching this movie as its not gonna make any difference. Precisely, it’s a sheer waste of money and time.
