MISCELLANEA: First Science Olympiad

The first series of the Divisional Science Olympiad jointly organized by Intel Pakistan Cooperation and Second Science Education Projects, Punjab Education Department was opened in Lahore, at the Children Library Complex.

The Science Education Project (SEP)-II, Punjab has received over 100 projects from high and higher secondary school students in the Lahore division, as well as 40 research programmes from the Rawalpindi division students. The projects are in the categories of biology, chemistry, physics, computer sciences and mathematics. The young researchers undertook the projects collectively as well as individually during the three month duration of summer vacation, constantly supervised by scientists.

To guide and motivate high and higher secondary school students to undertake research projects and compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel-ISEF) to be held in Arizona, USA, in May next year, the Punjab SEP-II had launched this programme in May this year. It is the world’s only international science fair that represents all life sciences and is held annually in May.

As a part of the preparations to participate in the Intel-ISEF, a series of eight workshops was organized for the students at the former divisional headquarters, attended by over 3,000 students and 1,000 teachers from government and private institutions.

Over 500 topics for research projects were received by SEP; proposed research projects were selected, with the assistance of the active scientists working in the different organizations.

The Scientific Review Committee after evaluation short-listed the students for the Provisional Science Olympiad. The short-listed candidates will be taken to the National Science Olympiad and the winners from that will represent Pakistan at the Intel-ISEF 2005.

Sharif Education Complex’s team (comprising Bilal Shaukat, Wasif Salam and Adeel Sheikh) clinched the first prize for the project “mobile signal jammer”, the Salamat-ICAS team of Zeeshan Shaukat and Osama Hassan came second for their project “relationship between bacterial growth and footwear” and Shah Jahan Mansoor of Quraban and Surreya Educational Trust, Walton Road, Lahore bagged third position for his project “adulteration in milk”.

Calligraphic Contest
A one day painting and calligraphy competition, jointly organized by the Punjab Textbook Board and the Pakistan Calligraphy Artists Guild, was held recently at the Alhamra Art Centre. The competition aimed at improving handwriting and developing an aesthetic sense in the students. It also promoted the rich cultural heritage among the youth. In the competition about 500 students from the government and 300 from private schools participated enthusiastically.

Aziz Rehman of Government High School, Pial Kalan, Kasur stood first, Ameer Talib and Navid Yaqub of Government Primary School, Rangian, Kasur won the second and third prizes respectively in the competition held for primary class students.

Adnan Dani of Government High School, Hafizabad, Muhammad Kashif of Government Iqbal High School, Garhi Shahu, Lahore, and Kishwar Mumtaz of Government Girls High School, Basti Malah, Jhang won the first, second and third prizes respectively in the competition held for middle school children.

Among the high school students, Abdul Samad of Government Primary Secondary School, Lahore, stood first, Raja Abdul Rahman of Government High School, Usmanwala, came second and Kaleemullah Ghazali of Jamia Model High School, Jhang Saddar, came third.

The prizes were distributed by special guests Federal Minister for special education and social welfare Zubaida Jalal, Punjab Minister for Education Mian Imran Masood and Director Punjab Textbook Board Mr Amjad Islam Amjad. Everyone who attended the competition highly appreciated the talented students and stressed the need for such competitions for the protection and promotion of art. A.N.J
