Don’t you think that the monotony of our lives is often broken by some significant and important day being celebrated? When days are going by at their fast pace we are often reminded that a special day is approaching and in spite of our busy schedules, we devote time and energy to that occasion.
One such day that we most recently observed was World Teachers’ Day, which fell on October 5. It is held to show that teachers are an important part of society and play a significant role in the moral development of the people.
World Teachers’ Day was launched by the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) Federico Mayor, at the International Conference on Education in Geneva in 1993. Why October 5? Because on this day as far back as 1966 a special inter-governmental conference, organized jointly by Unesco and the International Labour Organization (ILO), adopted recommendations concerning the status of teachers which remains valid today.
Children are often asked to treat their teachers as they would their parents; it is because they are the ones who provide us with education and also play a significant part in our character building. I still remember some of my school teachers who were extremely loving and affectionate and taught so well that even after years of leaving school it is hard to forget them. They not only gave us knowledge but guided us in every aspect of life, telling us right from wrong in such a way that their memories will linger with us throughout life.
It is a sad fact that today’s children are not as courteous towards their teachers as they are supposed to be. This is very wrong. You ought to give due respect to your teachers. You must acknowledge your teachers’ role in your life and their contribution to your achievements.
October 5 has passed but don’t wait for next year. You can do it any day of the year.
