“Hey give me back my magazine Emma; mom brought it for me not for you,” I said in a firm tone snatching away the magazine.
“Give that back to me Betty. She actually fetched it for me,” retorted Emma.
My name is Betty and I am twelve and have lived all my life in Florida. I am a skinny girl with blond hair and Emma is my little sister and she is ten.
We just left our old home last week because my father got a new job. My new neighbourhood doesn’t sound so good. I have no friends in this neighbourhood and I don’t like my house either. It’s at the end of the street. It’s a very big house with three floors. My mom and dad’s room is on the top floor Emma’s room is on the second and my room is on the ground floor and the basement is just at the bottom of my room.
My sister thinks that the house is really cool but I think it’s very weird. My sister sometimes makes fun of me because I get scared very easily and she calls me a coward every time.
I think my house is haunted, I guess you’d laugh at this thought but it really is. When I sleep in my bedroom I hear a thudding sound from the basement but I always ignore it.
One day I told mom about it, mom laughed at me and said Emma is right you really are a coward. But hearing about the footsteps only Emma believed me. That night Emma was in my bedroom to hear the footsteps; when the clock struck twelve, again we could hear the footsteps. Emma asked me to sneak down but I warned her that if dad caught us sneaking, he would be cross. But Emma ignored me and got hold of my arm and raced to the hall. She told me to pick up the two swords which my dad had brought to hang as show pieces on the wall. I silently obeyed her like a slave.
Then we entered the basement. Suddenly my mouth dropped open for there was truly a monster there. He was all green with eight yellow glowing eyes and three legs, his mouth was very big and when he saw us he smacked his lips and came towards us.
A cold chill ran down my spine and I was shivering very much. Emma was also frightened but she acted as though nothing bothered her. When the monster came closer to us Emma took out her sword and waved it at the monster, so did I but neither of us knew how to use the swords. Suddenly the monster caught Emma, held her up in his hand; suddenly I got an idea. I ran to the hall again and got hold of dad’s hunting gun. I ran back to the basement closed my eyes and shot the monster. Suddenly Emma fell down and green liquid began to ooze from the monster’s body. There was a loud moan and the monster was gone. Emma was amazed!
In the morning Emma and I were feeling very tired. My mother told my father about the thudding noise I had heard from the basement. My father told her that he would go there and see what there is with his hunting gun. He warned me and my sister not to follow him or else we might get scared. At this Emma burst out laughing and I joined her too!
