Importance Of Art Education In Schools

By Khalil Zafar

Many people feel that creative art in school is a waste simply because it is not “work”. Through the years creative art i.e music, dance, theatre, etc. have become a valuable part of education. Usually the ‘work’ part of education is emphasized while the creative side is ignored.

Creative art does not mean the appreciation of art but the actual ‘doing’ of art activities by children. Art provide the means for children to realize their full potential and grow into complete human beings. It contributes to the development of the child by making the child aware, by stimulating the imagination, by sharpening the senses and providing forms of expression for ideas and emotions.

Art can play a vital role in boosting morale, lifting spirit and keeping the school atmosphere at a higher level than that found outside. It greatly enhances school life and atmosphere, and provides recreation to the child. A society which neglects arts in school is dangerously sick because it does not provide a means of expression.

Many countries have come to realize that development should not simply be economic but also cultural. Creative art is an important tool for developing a sense of national pride and unity, even a cultural awakening. This culture, the traditional form of art, can be taught to school children as a part of normal education. Art can revitalize cultural sensibility in school children, an experience and understanding of their own culture, no understanding of the outside world is possible until the child understands the traditions they have inherited.

When it comes to the implementation, art comes squarely against more academics and vocational subjects which are more important and useful. When a choice has to be made between the two the result is often dropping of practical and aesthetic subjects in favour of the academics. For economic reasons the government tends to give priority to formal education rather than to cultural activities. A simple good education is better than science in this fast changing world.

Art not only gives the activity added interest but also reinforces the other curriculum area. The advantage of having arts as a subject is that it can help children see the same things in a variety of ways. If art can be treated as a discipline in its own right children would be encouraged to take it up as a subject giving them more opportunity for further enhancement. It can be linked to other subjects such as science, geography, English etc.; for example, in English they might link their creative writing to painting by putting down on paper both in words and in pictures, it will develop their interest and confidence.

Never discourage a child when he creates something.
