Movie: 13 going on 30

By Rabia Ali

13 going on 30, is an eye opener for all those thirteen year olds who think that becoming a teenager means that they should act cool and join popular and hip gangs, as is the case with Jenna (Jennifer Garner). Getting highly impressed by the six chicks, (a bunch of snobbish and popular girls of her school) she invites them to her 13th birthday party. But the party turns out to be a flop and Jenna blames her best friend Matt for it.

In a fit of anger, she locks herself in the closet and makes a wish to turn thirty and viola, her wish comes true. She wakes up and is astounded to see herself as a 30-year-old woman. Later on she finds out that she works at the Poise magazine, is friends with the leader of the six chicks, lives alone in an apartment and is going out with a celebrity. Jenna thinks she has a perfect life until she finds out that she has no real friends, has a reputation of being impudent and bad-mannered, she doesn’t talk to her parents and Matt isn’t her best friend anymore. She then carves out a way to undo mistakes of the past but realizes that it’s too late to live her life the way she wants to. Jenna regrets her wish of becoming a grown up and wishes that she was thirteen again.

A mixture of comedy and light romance with a few tearful scenes, 13 going on 30 is slightly recommended for a slow, steady afternoon.
