He flies on his wheels!

The roller-skating has surged more popularity over the years here in Pakistan. It has proved to act as a cool sport for the teens and kids in order to stimulate their mental and physical health as well as to lead them towards surfeit of excitement, enthusiasm and profound exposure. This sport stands the radiant roller-skaters in good stead in later years of their life as well.

Khalid Saeed endeavoured for the commencement of roller-skating as a strenuous sport and established Pakistan Skating Federation in Lahore, some twenty years ago. Furthermore, the supremo, Syed Arif Hussain volunteered to carry out this task and took the first step to launch roller-skates’ coaching in Karachi.

Nine-year-old Sarim Shameer, studying in fifth grade at The City School PAF Chapter, is a stupendous little roller-skates champion. His keen interest in roller-skating has pepped him up on the competitive grounds. He got acquainted with roller-skating as a hobby, which later became his greatest passion, when he was just six years old. Presently, Sarim is considered as one of the most agile kids in his batch under the supervision of Mr Arif Hussain and Farhan Ali Bukhari at the KMC Sports Complex.

Our dynamic young sportsman has participated in various sports competitions and has won awards and medals galore to his credit. Sarim’s first experience of taking part in a roller-skating tournament was brought about in the year 2002 at Women’s Sports Complex, where he participated in all three categories. There, he won as a gold-medalist in the under-10 category, whereas he stood at second and third positions under-12 and under-15 categories respectively.

In 2003, another National Skating Championship took place in Lahore, where Sarim secured first and third positions in under-10 and under-15 categories. In February 2003, a roller-skating talent show was held at the Neighbourhood Park, Clifton, and there he got first position in both the categories of under-10 and under-15 kids. Moreover, Sarim won two gold-medals consecutively in the under-10 and under-12 Junior Boys Roller Skating Competition on August 13.

Apart from his knack in roller-skating, Sarim is a jack-of-all-trades. He is a brisk swimmer. He got first position in under-10 swimming championship at Agha Khan Sports Complex in 2003 and 2004. He actively takes part in all sorts of co-curricular activities, may it be in his school, some district competitions or on the national level. He has been a throughout achiever in debates and swimming and a smashing topper as far as his academic progress at school is concerned.

Sarim’s mother believes that his dadi’s prayers and good wishes are behind all his remarkable achievements. He would not have been an all-class winner without them.

The roller-skating passion has started running in Sarim’s family. His cousins Shariq Saleem had been an under-8 champion, whereas Shaaz Saleem, a three-year-old, is regarded as Pakistan’s youngest roller-skates champ. Sarim is looking forward to take this sport as a profession and represent his country on an international level. Let us keep our fingers crossed and hope that our little sportsman would turn out as our national hero someday.
