STORY TIME: A blessing in disguise

By Aisha Rahat

“Class, I would like you to meet your new classmate,” the teacher announced. Standing beside the teacher was a girl looking sweet and charming.

“Hi, class my name is Nara. I have come from a beautiful valley called Swat. My father has started a new business in this city so we had to move in here.”

While she introduced herself, every single person in the class was making plans to befriend her, including Natasha, who was the most popular girl of the class. In the recess, Natasha was about to walk up to the new girl to introduce herself when she saw the whole class had already gathered around Nara. In a matter of minutes, Nara had become the most popular girl of the class. Everyday she used to tell adventurous stories of her past to the whole class and received loads of applause. She helped everyone in their studies too as she came out to be an intelligent girl. From studies to sports, she knew everything. She was almost perfect.

The whole school was under Nara’s spell, which was unbearable for Natasha. She felt as if Nara had taken her place and now, her classmates and teachers, to whom Natasha once was a role model, ignored her completely. Her best friend had forgotten about Natasha since Nara’s arrival. Natasha felt so lonely. Her world was turned upside down. The love that people felt for her was suddenly gone. Her life was ruined and yet she could not do anything. She felt so helpless. She wasn’t jealous of Nara. In fact, she wanted to be her friend but she also wanted to win back everyone’s heart and not be ignored as they say that the greatest pain in life is not to die but to be forgotten.

Natasha was unaware that good days were awaiting her. One day she was sitting alone in the playground at lunchtime, watching the other kids playing cricket. Nara hit a shot. The ball went high up in the sky and came down forcefully hitting Natasha on the head. Natasha fell to the ground and fainted. She was taken to the hospital and when she opened her eyes, she could not remember anything. The doctor said she had Amnesia — a temporary loss of memory — and would regain her memory in a week or so if she had been taken good care of.

Nara could not forgive herself for what she did, though it was not intentional. She spent day and night with Natasha as she found out that Natasha lived with her grandmother, who was too old to look after her. Nara assisted Natasha in her studies. After school, she used to walk Natasha home and also prepare tea and dinner for Natasha and her grandmother. Nara helped Natasha with the exercises that the doctor had recommended. At school, everybody used to surround Natasha trying to make her remember things. It was after two weeks that Natasha regained her memory. She once again felt closer to her classmates.

The whole school celebrated Natasha’s recovery. Natasha was once again a special personality of the school and Nara became her best friend. So Amnesia was actually the blessing in disguise for Natasha.
