MOVIE: Princess mononoke

By Humna Ishtiaq

Acclaiming reviews such as “Breathtaking” (-The Boston Globe), the adventure epic, Princess Mononoke is another in the series of masterpieces by the famous Japanese Animated film Director, Hayao Miyazaki.

Starring the voices of Clair Danes (as Princess Mononoke), Minnie Driver (as lady Eboshi) and Billy Bob (as Ahitaka), this animation is set in times when the gods of nature and humans populated the world together. Princess Mononoke is the story about a young fearless girl, raised among the forest spirits and gods, who hates humans for invading her home forest and is after the blood of their leader, the graceful and poised, Lady Eboshi.

The story begins with the plight of Ashitaka, a young warrior who, while fighting a God-turned-Demon to save his village, gets inflicted with a wound, carrying with it a deadly curse brought on by hate. In order to find a cure for his curse, Ashitaka sets out on a journey towards the west where news of clashes between the gods and the humans are rampant. Once there, he finds himself in the midst of a battle between a group of humans, struggling to make their living, and gods of the forest. The human settlement, Irontown, is ruled by lady Eboshi, a bold woman whose only objective is the survival of her people. Her invasion of the forest angers the forest gods and young Princess Mononoke, who vows to kill the lady and put an end to the misuse of her forest.

Ashitaka inflicted by a curse borne of hate, knows of the futility of bitterness and anger. As the heedless clashes gradually build, the young warrior must convince Princess Mononoke and the people of Irontown to live in harmony and end the conflict that threatens to spell doom for all.
