BOOK: Learning computers was never so easy

By M. Khalid Rahman

With so much emphasis on use of computers in daily life, our teachers needed some good textbooks with which they could give their students some working knowledge of computers: what they are; what they do; and how they work. Now Paramount Publishing Enterprise has come up with a wonderful series of textbooks Computers made friendly.

The series focuses on providing the students of primary and middle school lots of information on computer, its features, peripherals, and operating systems.

The series also deals briefly with various computer languages in use. Besides, it enables the reader in such practical applications as word-processing, making spreadsheets, building databases, and creating presentations. They also give an overview of Internet, Computer Networking and E-commerce.

The books are interesting and easy to understand. They are well illustrated and student-friendly, with follow-up activities that motivate students without overwhelming them, although the standard of illustrations needs some improvement.

The books conform to the guidelines given by the boards of education. They are so simple and easy that even parents and office-workers who want to become computer-savvy can learn easily from them. With just a personal computer at hand, and this series of books, one can do that at office or at home.

However, the books in the series appear to be a little expensive than they should be, although they are not as costly as the imported ones. The price of the book for class one, for instance, is Rs70, and that for class 8 is Rs120. The publishers should bring out an affordable edition, using a less expensive variety of paper, so that even those kids who can’t afford to buy a Rs100 burger for lunch may also benefit from the book.
