Students to present cranes as thanks giving

By Dr A.A. Quraishy

In response to the gracious gesture of presenting one thousand cranes by the Consul General of Japan to the City Nazim, Hina Ahmad and her sister Samia Ahmad have prepared fifty bejewelled paper cranes for presentation to the Consul General of Japan.

They have used colourful pearls to separate one crane from the other.

It should be recalled that the Consul General had presented paper cranes to the Nazim as a goodwill gesture, hoping that peace will prevail in the disturbed city of Karachi as a part of honouring the Japanese belief that any wish could be fulfilled if one thousand cranes were made by anyone harbouring a private wish.

Although this is not part of Islamic belief, but the presentation is a gesture of kindness shown by the great nation of Japan towards Pakistan as a bond of friendship between these two countries. This gesture must be appreciated.

The Consul General has consented to accept the cranes. The sisters did not make one thousand cranes but confined it to a symbolic fifty to express gratitude of the student community to the friendly people of Japan and to pay homage to Shadako.
